“The coalition of the status quo is going to say my plan hurts teachers and hurts public education. They are going to do whatever it takes to say reform is a bad idea. They are going to argue for the status quo. It’s just the opposite. That type of rhetoric is insulting to the people across this state demanding better schools.”

—Gov. Piyush Jindal, in his Jan. 17, 2011 address to the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) during which he unveiled his sweeping reform package for public education. Piyush’s mean spirited rhetoric, in which he trashes teachers as a collective group, now takes on a sinister tone in light of last Friday’s shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

—Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols, apparently trying to explain that the administration never, ever intended to conceal informatin from the public—no way, no how.

—Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein health policy adviser Calder Lynch, directing a DHH employee not to use a state government email account. (No word if this was cleared through Kristy Nichols.)

“There is no question in my mind that this is all part of the ALEC game plan.”

—Bloomfield Hills (Michigan) School Superintendent Ron Glass, discussing four bills now pending before the Michigan Legislature that, if passed, would implement public education “reforms” virtually identical to those now tied up in litigation in Louisiana. Glass said the bills were part of the game plan of the American Legislative Exchange Council which writes “model legislation” for its state lawmaker members to take back home for passage.

“This is not a laissez faire plea to defend the status quo. This is about making sure this tidal wave of untested legislation does not sweep away the valued programs our local community has proudly built into its cherished school system.”

—Glass, in a “call to action” that he sent out to opponents of the four bills.

—π-yush Jindal, attempting to be clever in referring to the Coalition for Louisiana Public Education which opposes his education “reform” programs. (Psst! Hey, π-yush: it should be, “The coalition….has fought reform….” Gotta make your subject and verb agree. Didn’t they teach you that at Baton Rouge Magnet and at Brown?)

—Romney foreign policy adviser Dan Senor (who is the son-in-law of former Secretary of State and State Insurance Commissioner Jim Brown), on the overt solicitation of a cabinet position in the expected Romney administration by Louisiana Gov. Piyush Jindal who at the same time was insisting (fooling no one in the process) that he had the job he wanted.

“They were on television, it was unbelievable; it was five, six days later, absolutely eviscerating him. Now they’re calling him a bum. Real profiles in courage.”

—Senor, in that same interview with London’s Daily Mail, referring to Piyush Jindal and New Gingrich, both of whom turned on Romney following the election.
