My sorrow at the loss of Wapo began when Bezos took over. I ceased reading it at that point and cancelled my subscription. I no longer trusted anything it reported. So, if it goes down the chute entirely, it will be no loss for me.
Bezos’ intent is transparent: appease Trump. He’s a corporate fascist protecting his profits by doing his part to eliminate an effective free press as a way of pandering to Trump’s authoritarian desires. He’s as much as saying out loud, “See! I’m not a threat. I can even be helpful. Don’t go after me.” Those who won’t submit voluntarily like Bezos will be bought out by the obscenely rich so that one person can own NBC, CBS, and if they get their way, CNN and establish control over both the content and the flow of information. It differs somewhat from the Fox model. Murdoch simply saw an opportunity for profit exploiting the paranoia of the political right in a nation unprepared for sensationalized media. The Ellisons’ on the other hand are seemingly True Believers in Trump’s world view, aren’t the least bit bothered by his methods, and aren’t in it for the profit. Still, they both work toward the same ends, along with Elon Musk and X as well as many others. And Jeff Bezos has joined them. They all have other, larger profits to protect than the media they own. Corporate leaders protecting their wealth by cooperating with an authoritarian and transactional government. Fascism 101.
