The defense MAGA fascists offer for the ICE Gestapo is that the people they are “arresting” are in the country illegally and therefore have no rights. That excuse fails on three levels. It fails to recognize or apply the concept of proportion. We do not treat, nor have we ever treated, all crimes as the same or deserving the same consequence. Trump has demonized people who are not a threat to the point of shooting protestors and zip-tying five year-olds as if that is appropriate action. It’s not. The excuse also fails to acknowledge the reality of ICE operations. There is nothing about how ICE is going about its operations which remotely fits the definition of “policing” or “law enforcement.” Masked, unidentifiable, without warrants, with disregard for rights, and unaccountable for their actions ICE is more lawless gang than police force. Aiding ICE lawlessness is an utterly corrupt DOJ who will attempt to intimidate and/or prosecute anyone who even so much as criticizes ICE operations. It’s a perversion of law enforcement. And finally, their excuse fails to acknowledge the plain language of our Constitution, which says it applies to all persons within our borders – a reading which has been affirmed by previous Supreme Court rulings. Denying this reality demonstrates either ignorance, hypocrisy, ideological bankruptcy, or some combination of the three. It’s true both Obama and Clinton also had ICE deport illegal aliens and in some cases deny them the rights afforded to them under the Constitution. But they did so without an ICE Gestapo. Without a corrupt Homeland Security and DOJ slandering and prosecuting the families of Americans in defense of their lawlessness. Without snatching people out of their naturalization hearings and without kicking in the doors of Americans and hauling them out into the snow in their underwear. But Trump and the ghouls he has turned loose on America is not what makes it fascism. The tens of millions of Americans who support it – in violation of every ideal expressed by the Founding Fathers – is what makes it fascism.
I am on the verge of becoming unhinged by the failure of the MAGA crowd to be moved by the inhumanity of ICE. How can a normal human being observe what they are doing and still defend it as getting rid of the worst of the worst?
