Has anyone else noticed how quiet Louisiana’s junior US Senator has been lately?
It’s been a scant four months since his Feb. 4 glowing review of Trump’s 2020 State of the Union Address.
In that four-paragraph PRESS RELEASE, Sen. John Kennedy gushed on and on about how he (Kennedy) was in favor of “freedom, prosperity and building a better tomorrow for America’s kids.” He went on to affirm that the SOTU address “showed the president’s commitment to moving all these priorities forward.”
He lavished praise on Trump because “America is respected around the world” and added that Americans “have reason to be optimistic” and “confident.”
It was enough to kick in the gag reflex.
But lately, Sen. Kornpone has been uncharacteristically quiet. Normally, he’d run over his best friend to get to a TV camera. No more. And he’s not alone. News services all over the Internet have posted stories about how Republicans in Congress cut and run when asked for comments about Trump’s rhetoric about bringing in the troops, shooting looters, turning vicious dogs loose on protesters, about dispersing protesters with chemicals so he could have his precious Bible-holding photo-op.
No Republicans, it seems, want to talk about that or the killing of George Floyd or of the groundswell of resentment against this administration for bungling one crisis after another.
Right now, as I see it, Kornpone has two choices:
He can continue to pander to a tyrannical president whose support appears to be eroding from beneath him while keeping his own political support in a decidedly Red State.
Or he could do the right thing and condemn Trump’s incendiary tweets, his divisive rhetoric, his crazed confrontations with the media, his incredibly inane photo-ops and lose some of his support from Louisiana’s white supremacists—but keep his soul.
He will only do the second thing if/when more than half his constituents wake up to Trump’s abject failure as a world leader and the danger he represents to the survival of our country’s core values. Even if Kornpone turns on President Trump, I will never forgive his cowardice and prioritization of his own political power above the needs of the country and his own state. He may argue he was looking out for our best interests in the form of federal support, but it will fall on deaf ears with me. The principles of our representative democracy should not be sacrificed in deference to a President who does not believe in preserving it.
Let’s not forget than Senator Kornpone was in the group of GOP congresspeople who celebrated July 4th, 2018 in Moscow, supposedly to warn the Russians against interfering in the 2018 elections. Anyone actually believe that? Kennedy has been such an obedient lapdog. I’m not sure he has any integrity left, much less a soul unsold to the highest bidder.
Mr. Winham and Earthmother….my sentiments about Senator Kornpone EXACTLY! Thanks to both of you for saying it so well!
I don’t care if he keeps his soul or his white supremacists… he has lost my vote. And that opportunistic, steaming pile of trash can keep his mouth shut.
I think the soul of Senator Kornpone was a lost cause at least since his 2016 campaign commercial in which he claimed that he’d rather drink weedkiller than be a member of the DC Insider Club. I’m pretty sure he drank the Club’s Kool-Aid. See embarrassing commercial here: https://youtu.be/Y4rAUp1SJ60
I’d be remiss if I didn’t link his hokey “Choose love first, but remember to pull your gun if your loving embrace (or knee to the neck) fails,” campaign commercial instant classic, so here it is: https://youtu.be/oP1f1yKTGJ4
I reckon I’m glad you seem to believe there is some hope for our dear Senator still.
I hope that somebody good runs against him!
It’s up to We the People to find, support and work for that Somebody Good.
Pretend senator doctor lapdog bill cassidy is up for reelection this November. Thus far, only Antoine Pierce has announced a challenge. So let’s send him to Washington. Cassidy is no better than kennedy, just quieter.
Senator Kornpone will continue to get sent to Washington simply because he has an R behind his name and the only way he won’t will be if someone with a redder R decides to run against him
agree with Ms. Edith, add, Kennedy and the rest of the cowards are complicit with Trump’s attacks on reality and the US. Barr is playing the cards, and the cowards will take credit for saving our Nation. Some “deep state” intelligence operation??? foundation is visible with Pence for President, Cruz or Tom cotton as VP. and ron thompson needs coffee to wake up. will do better next time thanks

He has my vote.
