The common excuse “Republican” voters use for Trump is that any Democrat, no matter who it is, would be worse than Trump’s ego, Trump’s lies, Trump’s grift, and Trump’s authoritarian power grabs. I can’t help but think to the Republican debate in 2016, back when one could still write Republican without having to use quotes. Minus Trump most of those candidates were standard politicians. I didn’t agree with most of them on the issues but they were emotionally mature people who respected the office they were running for. Had the Democrats nominated Wanda Sykes in 2016 I would have found myself either voting for one of them or not voting at all. But I would not have voted for Wanda Sykes to be president of the United States of America. “Republicans” did. Three times. And there is absolutely no excuse that will ever be sufficient for that betrayal.
