As soon as Trump could call anyone any thing he wanted to and spew division and hatred, many showed their true colors. They had permission from our illustrious leader and elected officials to bring that buried hatred out. It’s really scary. And, of course, Louisiana is leading the way for all the Southern states to do the same. We’re number one in something. Aren’t we proud??
IMHO, the only way to stop all of this, nationwide, is the simplest way and the way I thought districting was supposed to work, i. e., create districts geographically based on population with an equal number of people in each district and have the districts contiguous. This isn’t just just race issue. It is a partisan issue and the courts apparently believe it is okay to gerrymander on a partisan basis, but not on a race basis. It is impossible to gerrymander to please everybody and we should stop trying and save ourselves and the courts a lot of time. Neither Republicans nor African Americans in our and some other states would be happy with this simple approach, but they aren’t now and apparently never will be unless we allow districts to continue to snake around trying to make sure everybody has equal opportunity to elect somebody in their party or of their race in any jurisdiction only to realize that would only work if nobody ever moved within or among districts and nobody was ever born or died. And, though we pretend to believe it, we seem to really suppress that the goal is opportunity not ensuring victory. Ensuring should be impossible and attempts to ensure the election of a member of a particular party or race is patently unfair – again my opinion.
Baton Rouge has had at least 2 African American mayor/presidents. Americans have had an African American United States President. Isn’t it time we allowed Martin Luther King’s dream to become a reality? [“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”] I am certainly not naive enough to believe racism and partisanship do not exist. I am not stupid enough to think they will not always exist nor that gerrymandering can eliminate either of them.
You make a good point. Thank you.
