Rep. Danny McCormick is a damned fool.
That’s the only way to describe a man who uses his six-year-old granddaughter as justification for allowing anyone 18 and older to carry handguns without permits – or training.
McCormick has filed House Bill 131 – for the fourth consecutive year – which would allow adults over the age of 18 to not only carry concealed handguns without permits, but to do so without the currently required training.
McCormick, a Repugnantcans from Oil City, absurdly and thoughtlessly cited the proficiency of his six-year-old granddaughter, who he said used an AR-15 rifle to kill her first deer last year, as the pseudo-sound reasoning behind his bill.
He asked the not-so-rhetorical question, “Why don’t we trust law-abiding citizens with their Second Amendment rights?” in supporting his bill.
Well, first of all, Mr. McCormick, if you give blanket approval such as you advocate, what possible assurance do you have that everyone who takes advantage of this new-found freedom will be a “law-abiding citizen,” as you so eloquently put it?
The Nashville shooter at the Covenant School was “law-abiding,” until yesterday, when she wasn’t anymore.
Secondly, you seem hellbent on defending citizens’ Second Amendment rights while your fellow Rethugnicans, from Rhonda Santis all the way down to frothing-at-the-mouth parish council members embark on a concerted effort to weaken First Amendment rights – or abolish them altogether.
At least some modicum of consistency is called for here, Mr. Second Amendment Rights Legislator. The mob that once called itself the Party of Lincoln is determined to gut women’s rights, voting rights, education curricula, LGBTQ rights, civil liberties, and First Amendment guarantees of free assembly (see Atlanta), free press (see Rhonda Santis in Florida and numerous parish councils in Louisiana).

In fact, the Repugnantcan Party has not seen a single right that we take for granted, which are promised us in the US Constitution’s Bill of Rights, that it not in favor of striking down – including an actual proposal by a Florida legislator to abolish the Democratic Party.
Except, of course, the precious Second Amendment. CAN’T TOUCH THIS is the mantra of the Repugnantcan Party when its faithful aren’t pausing to offer thoughts and prayers for the victims of yet another mass shooting.
But when all is said and done, I haven’t heard of a single drag queen show fatality. I can’t say the same for guns.

The best thing I can say for McCormick’s bill is, in the words of so many Repugnantcans when the subject of gun control is raised, now is not the time for the discussion. But when you think about it, and if you’re truly honest with yourself, you have to ask the single burning question:
When is the time?
Anyone!, anyone that says they “hunt” with an AR-15 isn’t a hunter. They are slaughterers of animals. Real hunters stalk their their prey on foot with a single-shot 22 caliber rifle. Assholes like Dannie McComic ride in an ATV to an elevated climate controlled blind sitting in the midst of a 1/2 acre seeded plot armed with an AR-15. Incidentally, AR is an abbreviation of Assault Rifle. So by its very name it is clear that it was not intended to be used to hunt game – or elementary grade school children. It has one purpose and that is to kill enemy soldiers in times of war.
So if Asshole McComic is training his 6 year old granddaughter to kill with an AR-15, send her to enlist in the Army or Marines. I’m sure they will welcome her into their ranks as a legitimate soldier. Who knows. Next hunting season she can hunt ducks and deer with an M-60 machine gun.
Where do you hunt? On the Moon. You’re comment is ridiculous.
The difference between “you’re” and “your” escapes some people. And is “on the moon” a question or a declaratory statement?
I hunt deer in north Louisiana and South Arkansas. I use a 22-LR with a 5 round magazine. This rifle has killing power at 200 meters. I walk into the woods pulling a 2 wheel game cart that I can comfortably sit in or hide behind. When I do take a carefully selected doe or buck I field dress it and then comfortably wheel it back to my truck to bring home and complete the harvest.
Incidentally, I don’t wear or even own any camo. Carhart overalls work just fine for me to limit out every year. Oh, and I always process at least one deer for charitable organizations.
Now, you can go back to the moon and look for more of your misguided gun fanatics who have their heads where ( speaking of heavenly bodies) the sun don’t shine.
What a reptile (apologies to reptiles).
It seems to me that today’s Republican party has taken the concept of “opposition party” to its extreme literal meaning, i.e., exists solely to discredit or even destroy the work of those who would govern responsibly – by which I mean represent and put into effect the will of the people. Perhaps the only solution is a multi-party system with at least another political party that has real clout. Can we do this?
Currently, as an open carry state, we can open carry firearms without training or permits. This is just canceling concealed carry permits.
The activists purposefully mis-classify the AR-15. They tell people AR stands for Assault Rifle when in fact it stands for their name – Armalite Rifle.
Some hunt with it but in my view, as a woman & volunteer for the Council on Aging, it has been invaluable to seniors and women for self & home defense.
With the increasing gang home invasions, the AR-15 has been what has saved more than one senior. It’s easier to handle and doesn’t break the fragile bones of seniors when fired. Petite women also find it invaluable for the same reasons.
We are an oil and college city where women of all ages live alone while our men work elsewhere. Until these same academics come up with a weapon that equalizes our chances of surviving an attack from a physically dominant attacker, forget “infringing” on ANY of my Constitutional Rights.
Besides, Evil government is the reason we have the right to bear arms in the first place.
So calling an AR-15 an Armalite Rifle rather than an Assault Rifle should clear its distinction as the number one weapon used by mass murderers. Well let’s look at how Armalite describes the AR-15.
“A lightweight designed to be manufactured with the extensive use of aluminum and synthetic materials. A smaller version of the AR-10 and the predecessor of the United States military M16 rifle. Developed by Colt into the semi-automatic Colt AR-15. Also known as “The Black Rifle”.”
So as the predecessor to the US Military M-16, you are saying that the M-16 is NOT an assault weapon? For
what then does the US Military use the M-16? Controlling sparrows around monuments? I doubt it. They use the M-15/AR-15 as an ASSAULT weapon.
And to hold up the state of Louisiana as a shining example of intelligent gun safety regulations and practices is ludicrous. This last vestige of sanity regarding concealed carry being cancelled only completely turns out the light of reason regarding state gun safety laws.
And as for the recoil of the AR-15 being gentle enough for a petite woman to comfortably bear, a 20 guage shotgun is more gentle, has a greater deterrent effect, and assures that a perpetrator will be severely injured if not killed.
I don’t buy your arguments for even a second.
Your an idiot. He did not say the M16 was not an assault rifle. Semi automatic so called “assault rifles” are and should be legal to own.
Again, the one calling someone else an idiot apparently doesn’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re.”
John Sachs, thank you… so well put!!!
Cindy, you are 100% correct. At least you understand the Constitution and its first 10 amendments. You can argue until you’re blue in the face. The liberals will never give in and keep touting the same garbage and lie about the republicans. That’s the Democrats mantra. Your last sentence is the whole truth of the matter.
I forgot to add – just to ease fears of those who truly think this is a bigger issue than the crime we need protection from – it isn’t.
I held an FFL to sell firearms as part of my management job for 17 years. Management had to sign off on every gun sale & we sold a massive amount of firearms.
Most Cajuns are familiar with guns but as crime was increasing or a serial killer was loose, many women & a few men, who aren’t accustomed to guns, would come to buy. Without exception, they were timid to downright terrified of just placing the empty gun in their hands for fit.
They all ask for training info & at one time shooting ranges trained women for free. In fact, I recommend women/seniors go to a training range first & try different firearms before purchasing.
Are there exceptions to every rule? Yes, I’m sure, and those are the ones to run from but I never came any. Save your fear for the criminals as they don’t follow laws.
I actually thought Ms. Hayes was your April fool joke. Now I am convinced she works for the NRA, or my Congressperson, Phd Christian, Julia Letlow, who wants Parents to have a bill of rights with School Boards???And just now I read Clay Higgins, but wait, he is right, gun violence does not exist. I recover, and remember, Uncle Earl upon being released from the crazy house, “I have a piece of paper showing I am not crazy, do you??” Thanks for a great article, and through it all, I think we will get an AR ban. Love always ron thompson
Yesterday, two of my colleagues suggested that if the principal or someone else in the school had access to a gun, they could have taken out the shooter. I said you have to be kidding. A person may be trained in how to use a firearm, but they have no training in confronting an active shooter. Yesterday, I watched the body cam of one of the officers who searched out, confronted, and killed the shooter. The cam footage begins as the officers drive up. One officer, before they open the door, calls for three officers. Four officers go in and began to search for the shooter. It’s a very choreographed movement of moving from room to room. Something they were trained in. So, we expect a principal or custodian to approach the situation in the same manner. Of course, we can’t. They have not had the tactical training. They themselves, will get shot. Considering the fact that the shooter knew the premises well, she was at an advantage.
Assault Rifles are meant for combat.Full stop. Older women have a right to defend themselves. A hand gun and proper training should suffice. The damage that the irresponsible availability of assault rifles has done and is doing to society requires a sensible and responsible restriction on access to AR-15 and the like.
Gun proponents refuse to connect the dots between their own decades long opposition to regulation of any kind and the current proliferation of guns and the increase in gun violence and crime all across the nation. It is not a position they hold from ignorance. It is a deliberate, willful choice to refuse to acknowledge their own personal contribution to the problem. That’s why school shootings keep happening. It’s not just the person who pulls the trigger. It’s all their millions of accomplices, too.
