Will it ever stop?
No, I’m not referring to the mass shootings which now seem to be a daily occurrence, though my rhetorical question might well apply to those senseless acts.
But rather, I am asking (again, rhetorically) if the bought and paid-for Republicans will ever reach down into their hearts and finally say enough is enough and something must be done to stem the proliferation of assault weapons in this country.
Columbine (13 killed), Sandy Hook (26 dead), Margaret Stoneman Douglas (17 murdered), Aurora, Colo. (12), Aurora, Illinois (6), Orlando (50), Las Vegas (60), Pittsburgh (11), Buffalo (10), Uvalde, Texas (21), Tulsa (4), and just yesterday, Ames, Iowa (3 dead).
Will it ever stop?
The question truly is rhetorical because the Republicans just don’t have the resolve to turn their collective backs on the NRA money and to say that guns are the problem.
Instead, we have blame for the spate of killings and the carnage that seems to have become almost routine being leveled at marijuana, single parents, rock music, video games, mental illness, the Internet and, believe it or not, ABORTION.
And the justification for assault weapons pretty much runs the gamut, too.
Our very own US senators chimed in with John Neely Kennedy, that erstwhile Democrat-turned-Republican when the political winds shifted in Louisiana, declaring that the need for IDIOT CONTROL was more critical than gun control. How’s that for slapping a Band-Aid on a gaping AR-15 wound?
Question is, Mr. Kennedy, while you are advocating for better mental health for the masses, do you have a place people with such needs can go? It seems that most of the mental health centers in Louisiana have been boarded up, creating something of a Catch-22 for your solution to a growing crisis.

Perhaps this story from four years ago might provide more insight into Mr. Kennedy’s compassion for kids:
And how about Bill Cassidy and his FERAL HOGS?

Yes, feral hogs are a problem, a big problem, especially for farmers. They can destroy a crop virtually overnight but I don’t think the aforementioned assassins, armed with AR-15s, were out for feral hogs. They were intent on killing innocent people. Among the 233 victims listed above, at least 72 were children.
Yet the gun-rights advocates clink to the 2nd Amendment as if it were the Holy Grail even as Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis seems hell-bent on abolishing the 1st and 4th, Amendments and the US Supreme Court just effectively SHATTERED the protection of the 6th Amendment. (The highlighted link, by the way, comes from the conservative Washington Times.) To read the same story from another source, go HERE.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) says he is open to negotiating a reasonable solution to the slaughter. But we’ve heard his B.S. before. Remember, when following the restoration of order after the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, HE SAID, “All I can say is count me out. Enough is enough.” In no time, he was back to his usual Trump sycophantic self.
It’s critical that we don’t treat these shootings as just another news cycle and then move on to the next story about a six-toed monkey that can play Chopin on the accordion. We cannot allow TV news to serve only as a buffer to keep prescription drug ads from bumping together. We need substance in our news reporting and stories like these dreadful shootings must not be allowed to fade into the background so Republicans can conveniently avoid having to face cold, hard facts.
But if past is truly prologue, as Shakespeare told us in The Tempest, then the Buffalo, Uvalde, Tulsa and Ames stories will produce breathless stories by network correspondents before they quickly become old news.
We cannot allow that to happen. We must continue beating the drum of reform until, like Poe’s Tell-Tale Heart, the Republicans in Congress hear enough from their constituents to know that the time for change has come.
Persistence is the only hope for meaningful reform and we cannot afford to shrink from that duty. We must emulate Fred Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter was killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Guttenberg has been a constant thorn in the side of Republicans who would gladly walk away from their responsibility. He has never quit fighting the good fight and recently took US Rep. “Gym” JORDAN to task for his accusation of Democrats for “political theater” in their “PROTECTING OUR KIDS ACT.”
Why do you think Ted “Cancun” Cruz not only attended the NRA convention in Houston just days after the Uvalde shooting, but had the gall to POST A VIDEO of him participating in a charity poker tournament even as victims of the shooting were being buried. It was probably (and I emphasize the word probably) the most insensitive thing Cruz has done since he split for Cancun with his family during the 2021 freeze that left millions of Texans without heat or electricity.
It was bad enough that he could see nothing wrong with participating in the tournament even as funeral services were being held for victims, but to post the damn video on the Internet was especially crass, even for Ted Cruz.
Others, such as Rep. Greg Steube (R-Florida) take the offensive in DEFENDING their blue steel babies.
Whenever I see some macho dude in Walmart or Chili’s with a gun stuck in his belt, I want to advise him to at least get a holster because if it goes off where it is, he could well blow his brains out.
So, what are some of the solutions, other than thoughts and prayers, being offered up by these concerned Republicans? Well, Cruz says schools need fewer doors. John Kennedy advocates fewer idiots while Bill Cassidy just wants to shoot feral hogs. Missouri Rep. Bill Long is convinced that abolishing abortions will do the trick.
In Louisiana, as well as in other states, legislators are advocating that teachers be armed so that they can confront the bad guys. But if the cops in Orlando, or Parkland, Florida, or Uvalde aren’t willing to risk confronting a gunman with an AR-15, why should we expect teachers to do so?
Last time I checked, that wasn’t part of the education curriculum at any university in Louisiana. Isn’t it enough that teachers are already vastly underpaid and must still dig into their private funds to purchase classroom resource material? Isn’t it enough that politicians are looking over teachers’ shoulders to be sure they aren’t teaching something called CRT? Isn’t it enough that political hacks are telling teachers which textbooks are appropriate and which are not? Isn’t it enough that elementary school teachers find themselves changing students’ soiled clothing and middle- and high-school teachers are risking injury breaking up fights? Now we expect them to wear body armor and arm themselves against a shooter armed with an assault weapon?
I don’t freakin’ think so. Where the hell does Rep. Danny McCormick think he comes off as some sort of problem solver with that scatter-brained idea? Well, he has plenty of company. His bill, HB 37, passed the House by a 65-26 vote. Want to know who voted how? Click HERE.
Remember this, you knee-jerk a—holes, if that bill becomes law and some well-meaning teachers accidentally shoots and kills a kid, it’s on you. You can take the grim satisfaction in the knowledge that you helped kill a kid. The flip side is a teacher taking down a would-be killer, but the odds are far more in favor of the former scenario than the latter. You know it, and I know it.
Here is the reaction of one teacher to the suggestion that she be armed, locked and loaded:

Finally, here are a couple of 2021 Christmas cards from members of the US Congress:

Well said Tom. It’s enough to make a caring human cry. Yet not enough to get a Republican to vote for gun safety. Will the votes be there in November to be rid of them?
Let’s put it plainly. The ONLY thing the right believes in is that it is entitled to its self-righteous bullshit. Consistency of thought does not matter. Neither logic nor principles are required. Morals, ethics, and ideology just get in the way. Faith is filtered through prejudices and intellectual honesty is nowhere to be found. It’s why they can claim the rights of a fetus are inviolate before birth and the rights of the gun are inviolate after birth and not bat an eye. They are by God entitled to whatever self-righteous crap they claim to believe this very moment. These are people who DO NOT CARE how many innocents have to die for the sake of their prejudices. They didn’t care a decade ago at Sandy Hook, they don’t care after Uvalde, they won’t care the next time it happens. Because the ONLY thing that matters to them is the entitlement of their self-righteousness. And they will NEVER compromise their self-righteousness. Please don’t tell me that’s an unfair charaterization because polls show large majorities want reasonable gun legislation. Are innocents still being murdered in random mass shootings? Is the right still resisting all attempts to address the issue? Did Trump do a little celebratory dance over Uvalde victims at the freakin’ NRA convention? Then I’ll stick with my opinion.
Two hours later and I’m still worked up over this. It’s not just guns. It’s everything. Trump attempted a coup and instigated an insurrectionist riot when Pence refused to play along. But other than a handful of people who can still claim to be Republicans who has held him accountable? And who other than Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger will speak out on it? Perhaps the upcoming public hearings will reveal some staff and aides who still have principles but it won’t be any of the major players. Can’t stop there. A hijacked Supreme Court is expected to overturn precendent to restrict rights and weaken the fourth amendment – a first in American history. After just ruling evidence of innocence is not enough to appeal a guilty verdict. And then there’s the whole Ginny Thomas thing. Pandemic? Don’t infringe on my right to communicate disease with your Nazi public health mandates. Or mutate me with your vaccines. And didn’t that sage Louie Gohmert just say Republicans can’t lie to congress or the FBI, which was his mangled way of criticizing the Sussmann verdict? But that’s just the point. Verdict didn’t go your way? Miscarriage of justice. Election didn’t go your way? Stolen! The only reality is the reality which affirms my prejudices. If that’s not utterly sold out to your self-righteousness I don’t know what would be.
Right you are! And let’s stop electing presidents using electoral votes and use popular votes. It would have prevented the election of the most self-righteous and criminal president in our history (#45).
It is good that we are fired up about this, but, let’s face it, we are being ignored by the people elected to represent us who can actually do something about it. We can, as I have, and sometimes still do, waste our time writing letters and calling their offices [only to speak to a kid who probably jokes about our calls with his/her buddies], but the actual officials only see polls and only listen to the people they believe can keep them in a political office. Even massive protests would have little effect and history proves it. The only thing we can do is VOTE THESE PEOPLE OUT OF OFFICE. Your next chance is coming up when Kornpone fully expects to win in a landslide.

In 1981, Reagan Republicans took power with the plan of cutting the government back to the form it took in the 1920s. But Americans like a basic social safety net and protection for consumers and workers, so to win votes for tax cuts and deregulation, Republican leaders warned that white Christian men who just wanted to work hard for their own success were under attack by a government in thrall to minorities, women, lazy organized workers, and secularists who were destroying traditional values and turning the country over to socialism.
As wealth concentrated upward and it became harder and harder for ordinary Americans to rise, Republican leaders demonized Democrats and, when voters kept electing them, delegitimized elections themselves. Increasingly, they talked of the need for violence to protect individualism from an overreaching government.
Finally, as of January 6, 2021, they have rejected the idea of democracy and have convinced their followers—and perhaps themselves—that the only way to save America is to destroy it.
Today, Maggie Haberman reported in the New York Times that on January 5, Marc Short, then–vice president Mike Pence’s chief of staff, told Pence’s lead Secret Service agent that Trump was about to turn against Pence publicly and that the vice president could be in danger. Clearly, members of the administration anticipated violence on January 6 and, astonishingly, expected it because of the actions of the U.S. president.
President Joe Biden took office with what appeared to be the idea that he could wean Republicans away from their growing fascination with authoritarianism by creating a government that rebuilt the economy to work for ordinary people.
His American Rescue Plan enabled the U.S. to come out of the pandemic with the strongest economy among any of the liberal democracies that make up the Group of Seven (G7)—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and the nation’s economy is on track to grow faster this year than China’s for the first time since 1976.
Today’s jobs report shows that employers are still adding jobs: there were 329,000 new non-farm jobs in May. Unemployment held steady at 3.6%, with Black Americans showing the highest gains in labor force participation. With almost two job openings available for every unemployed person, wages continue to rise, up .4% since April. Wage growth for the year is over 5%. The stock market responded by dropping, likely a reflection of an expectation that the strong jobs report will mean the Fed will raise interest rates again soon.
Biden celebrated the numbers but said, “There’s no denying that high prices, particularly around gasoline and food, are a real problem for people. But there’s every reason for the American people to feel confident that we’ll meet these challenges.”
That inflation has been driven by a number of factors: increased demand, increased savings, supply chain snarls, and even the rising wages that are putting money into the pockets of those unaccustomed to economic gains. And since February, Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine has further disrupted oil markets, supply chains, and, increasingly, food.
Inflation has also been driven by the concentration of industry in the past several decades, which provided economies of scale but now sees us hamstrung as vital industries are controlled by a few operators. Notably, the pandemic shifted consumer preferences to online shopping, and the recovering economy kept that buying active. Shipping containers piled up on wharves with goods undelivered, and since just nine carriers control 80% of the global shipping market, they have been able to raise prices to triple their profits in 2021. The price for moving a container to the U.S. from China is now 12 times higher than it was before the pandemic.
Global oil production is also still out of whack with the rebounding global economy. Production dropped dramatically during the pandemic, with oil-producing nations cutting production by about 10% globally. Producers have been slow to increase production to keep up with the global recovery, not least because they are making record profits. Last month, Shell, which is Europe’s largest energy company, reported its largest quarterly profit ever, at $9.1 billion. It said it would use the windfall to buy back shares of the company, increasing the value of its stock.
The baby formula crisis has also been exacerbated by this concentration of industry. In the U.S, 90% of infant formula is produced by four firms, and they are protected from foreign competition by high tariffs. When one of the four, Abbott Nutrition, closed its Sturgis, Michigan, plant to deal with contamination, it sparked a true crisis.
Biden has tried to deal with these issues with the power he wields in the executive branch. He negotiated deals with U.S. carriers to clear out the pileup of containers in vital ports and asked Congress to pass legislation to increase competition in the carrying trade. (Both the House and the Senate have passed such bills, but they have not yet reconciled them to make one bill Biden can sign.) He released oil from the strategic reserve and asked Saudi Arabia to increase production, a request its leaders refused, but yesterday OPEC+ (the 13 members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries plus 10 oil-producing countries not in OPEC) agreed to begin ramping up their output back to where it was before the U.S. got them to reduce production in April 2020.
The administration has tried to increase the supply of infant formula by easing the way for more imports, worked with Abbott Nutrition to reopen their Sturgis plant safely, flown in two planeloads of formula from Europe, and arranged for a third planeload donated by United Airlines to arrive on June 9. On May 18, President Biden delegated authority to U.S. Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra to address the shortage of infant formula. Becerra has invoked the Defense Production Act for the third time to increase infant formula supplies. It is not clear how bad the shortage remains. While store shelves are empty, buying is up 13% since April, suggesting that people may be stocking up.
Biden has emphasized that he wants to move more manufacturing back to the U.S. to stop the sorts of disruptions that have caused inflation. On Wednesday, he pointed out that the U.S. has added 545,000 manufacturing jobs since he took office and that the U.S. created more manufacturing jobs in 2021 than in almost any year in 30 years. “This didn’t happen by accident,” he said. “This is a direct result of my economic plan to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out.” He called on Congress to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act to support domestic manufacturing.
On Tuesday, Biden published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal touting his economic successes and explaining how he plans to transition from the red hot economy of the past year to stable, steady growth. He promised to work with anyone “willing to have an open and honest discussion that delivers real solutions for the American people.”
Will any Republicans take him up on it? Something else Biden wrote makes me doubt it: “I ran for president because I was tired of the so-called trickle-down economy. We now have a chance to build on a historic recovery with an economy that works for working families.”
The big news today is that former Trump aide Peter Navarro was arrested on two counts of contempt of Congress. The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol had subpoenaed Navarro to hear testimony and read documents about his participation in the attack on our government. Although he has talked openly about the plan to overturn the election, he refused to comply with the subpoena.
Navarro was livid at being arrested and handcuffed and put in a cell, saying that if they had just called him and said they needed him down at court, he’d have shown up. (He appeared to miss the point that the subpoena he ignored is basically a call that says, “Hey, we need you down at the court….”) He claims that authorities have violated the Constitution.
Reacting to the arrest, Representative Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told Newsmax, “If you’re a Republican, you can’t even lie to Congress or lie to an FBI agent or they’re coming after you.” He claimed that the grand jury acquitted lawyer Michael Sussman of lying to the FBI about his contact with Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign with the argument that “[o]f course you’re gonna lie. Everybody lies!” but that is, of course, not true. The jury said that the Department of Justice, which brought the suit against Sussman, did not prove its case. It is against the law to lie to Congress or to the FBI. Navarro has not been tried yet; he has simply been indicted.
And on Wednesday, as the horrific murders of schoolchildren and teachers in Uvalde, Texas, have been followed by several more mass killings, Fox News Channel personality Tucker Carlson claimed that Democratic efforts to promote gun safety are not about public health. Instead, he said, Democrats want to disarm the people because they’re afraid of a popular uprising against them because “they know they rule illegitimately.”
We could write books in response to Tom’s spot-on thoughts about the terrible American reality where so many people worship cold metal instruments of death and destruction, while pretending to love Jesus. The fact that certain people choose to display guns as part of their celebration of the birthday of the Prince of Peace shows a sick, warped disconnect from the message of love that Jesus brought to a hurting world. Those Christmas family photos are an abomination. And those are members of Congress who have the unmitigated gall to oppose reproductive freedom. Of course.
By the way, we are gun owners, but not gun worshippers.
I would like to point out to senator Bill Cassidy, who used to be a doctor, who apparently once believed in the sanctity of human life, that not one of the victims of any of the now-daily mass shootings, has been a feral hog. Last I checked, there were no feral hogs sitting behind desks in schools, in hospitals, in houses of worship, grocery stores, entertainment venues or anywhere that children and other living beings go about their daily business. So go peddle your absurd BS somewhere else, Cassidy.
The fact that a large number of people in this country do not value human life enough to stop the slaughter, or offer decent medical care to all of our people. and love to hate anyone who is not like themselves, shows what this nation has become. Anyone who still believes “America” is the greatest country in the world is delusional. I would enjoy being a spectator when some of the haters go knocking at the Pearly Gates.
Cassidy is a corrupt goon. It’s sad that he passes for being not too much of an extremist just because he was one of the few who voted to convict the orange blimp.
Most of this country is becoming such a dystopia and will only get worse. People will continue paying higher prices to live in the decreasing number of “nice” places, exacerbating the problems. Oh well
My wife has been a classroom teacher in kindergarten- 5th public schools for 38 years. We’ve talked about her students many times over the years and I can say that she’s had any number of third graders who could and would disarm her if she were wearing a gun.
She hasn’t been thinking of retiring but will if the legislature passes this lame brained scheme.
Nothing will ever be done to stop or slow mass killings by guns without a movement to amend the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. Even with a successful change to the 2nd Amendment may not end this tragic dilemma of unbridled terror by mass murder of our children. Americans have over 300 million guns already in their possession and those cannot be confiscated ever. The massacre will continue, orange shirts or not.
