In one of his recent TV ads, Louisiana’s senior U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy pitches “more options” for medical care for America’s veterans and active military personnel.
Too bad he doesn’t feel the same way about the rest of America’s citizens.
Of course, going to bat for the military has that patriotic feel that gives us all a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. I mean, who wouldn’t want the best for Americans in uniform (well, other than someone with chronic bone spurs who would call them losers and suckers)?
But while Cassidy, who is up for reelection on Nov. 3, is touting “more options” for medical care for our military, he’s in a back room somewhere with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) to gut the Affordable Care Act which would STRIP HEALTH CARE from tens of millions of Americans, including half-a-million in Louisiana.
Nationally, it would strip more than 22 million Americans of their health care coverage, including those who survived COVID-19 who would suddenly find themselves classified as having preexisting conditions.
In Louisiana, more than 160,000 COVID-19 survivors would be considered as having preexisting conditions.
It is ironic that the bill being put forward by Cassidy-Graham would punish Louisiana citizens in other ways, as well.
For example, their proposed bill would take money from states like Louisiana that EXPANDED Medicaid and obtained coverage for more than 500,000 Louisiana citizens after his predecessor, Bobby Jindal, stubbornly refused to make coverage available and give it to states that FAILED to expand coverage.
What’s more, states would not be required to use that extra money to obtain coverage for its citizens or to help subsidize low- and middle-income citizens as Obamacare does.
Edwin Park, a policy analyst for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said the bill is “more disruptive” than any other Republican-sponsored bill to repeal Obamacare.
But hey, Cassidy is right there to fight for expanded medical options for veterans and active military personnel.
But will he go public with an ad campaign promoting his plan to jerk medical care from more than half-a-million Louisianans?
I think you can check that box No.
What is so disgusting about all these types of shenanigans is that Cassidy and other republicans like him are supported so strongly by the very people it hurts. Supported as well as by so many other people who are too busy with their everyday lives (like texting and reading Facebook) that they do not vote and could care less about informing themselves about what might be happening in their government.
As I have heard people (supposed voters) interviewed over the past couple of months I have been appalled by the ignorance many of them display. It’s often as bad as that old Jaywalking segment on the Tonight Show when Jay Leno hosted. The dilemma this presents is: Are we, as a nation, better off if these people simply don’t vote, or are their wrong decisions balanced by their accidental correct decisions? Our founding fathers created the Electoral College to prevent ignorant people from electing the wrong President. That purpose has long since evaporated and now it supposedly exists to provide some balance of power among the states – which it, in fact, does a very poor job of doing. In addition, the POTUS’s party is allegedly threatening to use a loophole to ensure his re-election. It simply needs to be abolished. But, I digress…Sorry.
Hopalong Cassidy is a true Jindalite/Trumpite, an expert in health care to insure the medical insurance thieves gets the book of VA benefits. And in line with Jindal using Veterans Benefits to promote themselves politically. Same ad JIndal used to get reelected via the Governors Honor Medal, Lane Carson using state equipment ( not sure) with Vets getting the Honor Medal. Now the Schroeder Team using Vets, including a friend of mine Mary Burns a nurse, now retired from the Army Reserve. Of course the Chosen one thinks a lot about our Vets, especially those that get captured like McCain. and while we are trying to fund the VA, the Indalites/trumpites want to “privatize” to make sure that money goes to people with bone spurs and little hands. and locally the great investigator for the La. IG , Greg Phares, Mr. Republican, finds our VA center had patients falling out of beds. The guys have no shame. Thankfully, Gov Edwards appointed Col Joey Strickland. I agree with CJG, The NRA crowd with its propaganda snookers a lot of vets, coupled with the White Nationalists and Russian operatives. I can assure you the intelligence agencies are aware of this problem. Think Sputnik. thanks ron thompson
Is it me, or is there at least one Cassidy ad airing right now that shows no Black people in it at all? Does this imply that he is only helping White people?
Well, a lot to talk about on this topic. But first, Tom, how come you never mention Joe Biden and his 5 deferrals from military service? He is every bit as guilty regarding accusations you make against Trump (at least W served in reserves..
We, as a nation, owe our veterans for their service and often for great personal sacrifice. The V.A. is a bureaucracy that seems intent to deny rather than help vets. Anything that improves on this is a plus. Trump has at least, made efforts to improve quality and cut red tape.
No citizens are denied medical care. That is a myth perpetuated by socialists (liberals) intent on destroying our capitalist economy (by socializing about a third). I work in that environment, and I can assure you that a significant number of patients that come in have zero insurance Walk through any Emergency Room in any hospital anytime.
Additionally, the “Affordable Health Care Act” is anything but that. The premiums are high, the deductibles are high, and unlike the promise made by former President, premiums went up for everyone, medical costs went up, and no one saved. And let us be honest, the Act was a “Tax”, not a health care legislation; the Supreme Court said so. Most poor could not afford premiums without subsidy, and some, not even then. AND, they must pay taxes on the subsidy because it is “income” !! Thanks Obama. The ones without insurance receive Medicaid. The “end game” of ObamaCare was to convert our system to a single pay care system of “rationed” health care run by government. Because of these factors, the program was doomed (and designed) to fail. The professor who drafted legislation said so publicly and you can Google anytime. I have no idea what the “NRA crowd”, white nationalists, Russian operatives has to do with any of this discussion that Tractor inserted..
You are correct about Biden’s 5 college deferments, however, Biden was declared unable to serve because of asthma. trump’s supposed bone spur deferment is a little shaky. Also, the difference here is that Biden has not called anybody who served in the military and who was captured, wounded, or killed “losers and suckers”.
As for emergency room visits by the uninsured, the reason that occurs is because they cannot be turned away. Believe me, if the hospitals could turn them away they would. I will be the first to tell you that many of those uninsured are not actually having a medical emergency, it is the only way they can see a doctor.
First of all, Zoe, Biden received 4 student deferments and then did take a physical for military service after completing his studies. He was found to have asthma (an actual condition as opposed to Trump’s bone spurs) and was declared eligible only for the draft in event of a national emergency.
At least Biden’s son served in the military honorably. That’s more than Eric and Donnie can say.
Second, no one ever said anyone was denied medical treatment. They are denied medical coverage. Ergo, they get treated by hospitals and then are presented huge medical bills they are unable to pay. So, please stop trying to put words in people’s mouths. And the premiums may well be high, but at least they do provide medical insurance for those otherwise unable to afford it.
I don’t think anyone is particularly thrilled about Biden as the Democratic candidate but I haven’t seen or heard anyone so enthralled with him that they would excuse the boorish behavior we see exhibited by Trump. How can you possibly observe the way he treats women, ridicules physically handicapped people, attacks military heroes and gold star parents, acts like a bully in a playground fight anytime anyone disagrees with him, evades taxes, sucks up to tyrants and bankrupts every business venture he’s tried and still defend him?
For you to look the other way at all these character flaws and to excuse his tantrums and idiotic “solutions” like nuking hurricanes and drinking disinfectant, promising (falsely) to produce his tax returns and to lie about having a plan to replace Obamacare “next week” makes you no better than him.
As Ben stated, Biden received his medical deferment after a physical exam. trump presented a “strong letter” from a doctor.
Nope, never paid taxes on the subsidy part.

Further:
I wondered why Cassidy was touting his support for veterans until I thought about the fact his opponent is a war hero.
Excellent point. That opponent being Adrian Perkins.
For whom I am voting.
After retiring from active duty, I worked in Veteran’s Affairs for a while. I counseled thousands of Veterans across half this state and used to keep several stacks of paper with contact information that Veterans could use to contact our members of Congress if they had a problem that we couldn’t resolve for them. I never had to replenish the stack with Bill Cassidy’s information on it. I don’t think more than a couple Veterans ever took those forms because every Veteran I served told me that he was completely useless… if you could even get him to respond at all. I don’t remember a single positive testimonial from anyone. None!
So, you can imagine my reaction as I watch this clown peddling himself as a friend of the Veteran and architect of “more options” for medical care. And to throw fuel on the fire, we received letters in late August notifying us that a new law now requires retired Veterans and their families to pay a monthly enrollment fee or lose insurance coverage. The fees begin on January 1st. Talk about a shot to the blind spot.
At this point, I don’t care if he unplugged his head from its long term placement in trumps ass and suddenly found God. That lying SOB is politically dead to me. I wouldn’t vote for him for dog-catcher and I’ve told him as much. If he can be part of a Congress that put that little knife in our backs, then you don’t want him mucking around in your health care either.
Agree with kamarcan, we (Ft. Polk Retiree Council) are briefed twice a year by VA. which means we know exactly what is going on at the VA. ZOE your comments are very degradilng, dumb, and duplicitous. ron thompson
