“Some 80 minutes after her (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) death was reported, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), a man without a shred of decency and seemingly without a soul, announced his intent to replace her as fast as possible, before the next president is sworn in. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) soon joined the Senate majority leader, announcing a 180-degree reversal from his position toward Obama Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland in 2016, and somehow blaming the Democrats for his rank hypocrisy and dishonorable conduct.
“And some of my colleagues in the media, regrettably, furthered the immediate politicization of Ginsburg’s death or demanded to know senators’ positions on the new nominee — before Ginsburg, whose dying wish was that the next president name her replacement, was even in her grave.
“Aren’t we better than this?”
—Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank, on Sunday.
“I think we’re too close to the election. The president who is elected in November should be the one who makes this decision.”
—Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Col.), 2016.
“I don’t think we should be moving on a nominee in the last year of this president’s term — I would say that if it was a Republican president.”
—Sen Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), 2016. [Well, let’s just see if he still says that.]
“What Republicans are trying to pull off with the post-Ginsburg power grab has no precedence in American history and represents a corrupt power maneuver by an unpopular president. That’s how the press should cover the unfolding story.”
—Eric Boehlert, writing for Press Run, a daily online newsletter that critiques coverage of major news stories.
While I wasn’t surprised at McConnell’s blatantly, power-mad, reaction to RBG’s death, I was also repulsed by it. I am hoping that many decent American voters will feel the same way. It is a good thing to see McConnell and his Mafia Senate Republicans doing their unsavory and damaging to our democracy actions right out in the open…but, just think of how arrogant McConnel & Company must be to think that there might not be a truly American backlash to their lusting for power without allowing burial for RBG? Dana Milbank has spelled it out for us, as he so often does. We must pay attention and vote this malignant Republican destruction of our democratic governance. A nation cannot survive being governed by lies and liars and these Republican Senators have blatantly flaunted their lying abilities….there we have it!
You would think tRump, McConnell, and other so-called Republicans would at least have the decency to pay RBG a tribute and say we will discuss a replacement after her funeral honoring her legacy. You would think. You would hope they had the decorum to do so. Is that too much to ask?
You want to talk about ugly; wait until Justice confirmation hearings begin and watch those kindhearted democrats in action. They are vicious at every turn. Truth is, they all agreed in 2016 (including RBG) that Justice should be replaced immediately. It is hardly without precedence that the party that holds the White House and the Senate determines that ( maybe about 30 times).
Remember the times when a mutual non-partisan accord could be reached without all of this hatred ? RBG got confirmed with 96 votes I believe. There is not a single democrat who would vote to confirm Jesus Christ were he Republican. The “Mafia Senate” doing their “unsavory and damaging to our democracy”. “Malignant Republican destruction”. Where does that come from ? The destruction I see is the leap towards socialism as advocated by Bernie, AOC and company, and now adopted by poor senile Joe. That is the greatest threat. And let us be honest; the real fear of democrats is that the butchering of innocents may be slowed down.
Butchering of innocents? What the hell are you talking about? Obviously, there are no innocent Blacks or detainees in your eyes. And who was it that launched the US into the longest war in this country’s history. My god, you are unbelievably narrow-minded and bigoted.
Zoe is talking about pro-choice. I’ve always referred to people like that as P.L.U.B. (Pro Life Until Birth).
