“I just want to do my job…and I’m going to keep doing it.”
—Dr. Anthony Fauci.
“The tempting analogy is to the election of 1932, in the midst of another set of crises. The public barely knew Franklin D Roosevelt, whom critics called an aristocrat without a coherent theory of how to end the Great Depression.
“ [T]he breadth of the anti-Trump coalition is a remarkable testament to Donald Trump’s capacity to inspire disgust.
—Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, writing in Sunday’s The Guardian
“Mr. President, the American people … have a right to protest. You cannot stop the people with all of the forces that you may have at your command.”
—The late Rep. John Lewis, a month before his death.
Until this administration Rep. Lewis (RIP) would have been unquestionably correct. I’m far from convinced Trump won’t try.
As he did with his semi-secret police in Portland.
“The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions. In this way, the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed” [Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf]
And this administration does not even have to be subtle about it – or so they seem to believe. They may be right about 1/3 or so of the population, but I hope against hope they are not about the rest of us and that the negative changes already made are not irreversible.
Thanks you two, I am confident we won’t have another Hitler, but the white nationalist and racists GOP won’t ever go away. Keep learning and keep loving ron thompson
These are scary times. I hope most citizens see the actual threat to our democracy.
The issue of the pandemic casts a bright light on the fraying of our national “cohesiveness.” People unwilling to wear face masks, screaming about encroaching on their freedoms. How about my freedom from your germs and potential asymptomatic covid-19 spread? Pure selfishness Is this a manifestation of the “Christianity” so many profess? What happened to “love your neighbor?” Can we love them and refuse to protect them at the same time?
My heart aches for the future of our beloved country.
