“…[A]s long as racial animosity exists, white and black Americans are less likely to look upward and see where the wealth and power really has gone. They’re less likely to notice that the market is rigged against them all. [M]ost Americans don’t see CEOs getting exorbitant pay while slicing the pay of average workers, won’t notice giant tax cuts and bailouts for big corporations and the wealthy while most people make do with inadequate schools and unaffordable healthcare, and don’t pay attention to the bribery of public officials through unlimited campaign donations.”
—Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, writing in The Guardian, June 14, 2020. [Obviously, a “loser” to Donald Trump.]
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
—Lyndon Johnson, to Bill Moyers, more than 50 years ago. [Love LBJ or hate him (and he was crude, dishonest, and a cutthroat politician to the core, easy to dislike), those words are just as true today as they were half-a-century ago.]
Sadly, I actually remember hearing this first hand. A testimony to my old age and to the truth of especially Southern Black/White relations. Not much has changed….it has just taken on new methods…
Edith, I was too young to hear it first hand, but I have used that same logic. That’s exactly what I tell others. As long as they have been convinced and brainwashed into believing that, they will continue to vote that way.
I have huge respect for Robert Reich. He is American economist, professor, author, and political commentator. He served in the administrations of Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. He was Secretary of Labor from 1993 to 1997. He was a member of President Barack Obama’s economic transition advisory board. To read his revealing posts go to http://www.robertreich.org
Absolutely right. I had the privilege of actually meeting him when he was Clinton’s Secretary of Labor. He was very down to earth in addition to being brilliant. I do remember being a little surprised at how diminutive he was/is, but he definitely does not have a “little man” complex.

Good move. He is a troll at best and lacks the desire to engage in dialog.

I always found him to be condescending at best.
Zoe, I will admit that four of the pledges are odd, however, two are right up the MAGA alley. The one relative to the creation of jobs and the limitations on outsourcing.
