“There’s no regrets on the part of this White House. We stand by those actions.”
—White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, on the aggressive tactics employed by US Park Police to clear Lafayette Park so Trump could have his Bible-totin’ photo-op. [She really should learn to make her subject and verb agree (There’s: singular, regrets: plural).]
“If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone.”
—Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, in speech he had written and was prepared to deliver in case the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944, had failed.
“I didn’t do it.”
—Donald Trump, when asked about his administration’s disbanding the White House pandemic team upon taking office. [Actually, he did do it.]
“No, I don’t take responsibility at all.”
—Trump, when asked if he took any responsibility for his administration’s slow response to the coronavirus outbreak. [The final three quotes are contained in a new television ad by the Lincoln Project, a group of former Republican political operatives opposed to Trump, to illustrate how Trump refuses to take responsibility for his blunders as opposed to former President Eisenhower.]
The abject failure of this administration, its lies, and abuses of power could not be more apparent – but only to about 60% of us, at most, and not all of them will get off their duffs and vote this regime out. Then, what? Either a continuation and intensification of this disgusting direction, or a victory for the opposition so small Trump can forever claim the office was stolen from him.
Not to worry Mr. Winham. Trump will lose in a landslide.
That’s what bothers me, Stephen. All of this negative energy against this administration may not be carried to the polls. I hope I am wrong.
Btw, I read your comments about John Carpenter. Right on point.
From The Lincoln Project to George Will to the genuine Christian Conservatives Trump’s Electoral College margin is being chipped away.
The problem will be -as we recently saw in Georgia -every possible mean to exact voter suppression-and manipulation of computer results. The Republicans know they cannot win a fair election. But acting in unenlightened self interest has never been an issue for those who ignore the principles of democracy, uphold bigotry and operate on a greed is good basis. Damn the flag-full speed behind.
We are looking at slow-motion voter suppression right here in Louisiana. We had no idea that voters over 65 could request mail in ballots for any election, until we started seeing remarks on social media that some over-65s received a letter from the Secretary of State offering mail in ballots, and others did not. We are well over 65 and didn’t get the SoS letter. Went online and requested the mail in ballot, and both of us received ours in three days.
So today Sec. of State Kyle Ardoin stated to the House committee investigating this issue that hundreds of thousands of us did not receive his letter as a result of a clerical error. Seems someone sorted who got the letter by who had EVER requested a mail in ballot. Well, that eliminates us – over 65, never requested a mail in ballot, oh, and we are Democrats! But Ardoin claims it was just a lil clerical error, not political, not voter suppression. Ain’t buying his nonsense (being a gently raised southern woman I was taught that is a genteel way of saying bullshit, which just isn’t fittin’.)
As a retired state communications pro, may I suggest to Kyle Ardoin: put up posters at polling places, do a little outreach, and let people know that anyone over 65 may request a mail in ballot for all elections. No reason needed, just the magic age where we are considered elderly. We like voting in person, will show up in person again once we don’t have to worry about dread diseases sneaking around public places. Oh, and we don’t have time to be elderly.
Folks, Don’t count your chickens before they hatch (yes, I know, overused cliche). I tend t agree with Stephen..will the momentum and energy we have seen in the protests carry on until Nov? Will the young people show up at the polls? If previous performance is any indication, I doubt it–too many divisions and agendas–dislike of Trump and his administration is not enough (don’t think most protesters are for Biden; for “change”, yes, however “change” is defined). Polls indicate that Biden is anywhere from seven to fourteen points ahead of Trump in national polls, but how are those numbers distributed? It is all about the Electoral College and Trump followers are committed, united and they vote.
If Trump is reelected, it will be an affirmation of his policies, he will take victory laps and unleash his vitriol, carte blanche, regardless of the magnitude of his win. If he loses, he will not go away quietly–don’t expect an easy transition of power, the election may be drawn out..cringe to think at either outcome.
