“Live free. By God man … stand up. If you’re frightened, on the other hand, by all means, you should be free to remain frightened. Patriots support your right to hide under a desk. With your mask on. Shivering at the very thought of standing against the oppression coming out of our Governor’s office.”
—Half-wit Clay Higgins, implying on Facebook that anyone with enough concern about the coronavirus to wear a face mask is somehow unpatriotic. [The most charitable thing that be can be said about this failed lawman (resigned once under pressure, fired from another post and just plain lied during the Michael Cohen hearings about the “thousands” of arrests he had made), child-support-avoiding deadbeat dad is that he is several croutons shy of a salad. This court jester actually thinks he can set the parameters that define patriotism in much the same manner as the Alabama preacher who several years ago compiled a list of those in his county who were going to go to heaven and those who were fated for the fires of hell. Folks, that kind of thinking, while somewhat amusing insofar as the minister’s righteous presuppositions, is not only demented, but dangerous when originating in the clearly disturbed mind an elected official. With Higgins, we have time-release stupidity: never in one dramatic dosage but in a steady, uniform flow.]
Tom: I think your key words here are “elected official”…who on earth elects these known dysfunctional jerks? What could he say, with his record, that would inspire enough confidence in his constituents to get them to vote for him? I am afraid that therein lies our problem. As long as “we the people” continue to elect unethical, dysfunctional public servants….we will be served accordingly. The problem is they dirty the whole pond and affect all of us. I am assuming that knowing ALL of his pitiful, even dangerous record, he will be duly re-elected???
Edith, all he had to say was “I’m for Trump,” and the sheeple voted for him. He was originally a used car salesman and is a boorish, uneducated, embarrassment of a representative—and a man—who couldn’t cut it as an Opelousas police officer or St. Landry deputy. In the 2018 election, there was a wonderfully-qualified, rational, intelligent opponent in former federal magistrate Mimi Methvin, but because of the “Democrat” label, she was automatically seen as an inferior candidate—which says a lot for the voters of the 3rd Congressional District.
If memory serves, Higgins was endorsed by former State Rep. Elbert Guillory, who has his own political baggage and which also speaks volumes about the voters in that district.
Louisiana will never pull itself up from the bottom of all social, economic, health, employment and crime surveys as long as we continue to keep people like Clay Higgins and his ilk in office.
We are looked upon as an ignorant, backward state….because we earned it. But we win at football, so I guess that’s what’s important.
Finally, I would add—and this is for Clay Higgins’s benefit in particular—insisting on showing yourself to be a damn fool doesn’t make you a patriot.
I would only add that Higgins’ constituents knew exactly who they were electing, just like the people who voted for Trump knew what they were getting. I pondered this for 3 years before the reason came to me: They voted for these men not just because they like them, but because they are like them.
Elbert Guillory is one of 2 African American politicians (of whom I am aware) in Louisiana who are members of the Republican Party for the personal notoriety and power they derive from being iconoclasts. Neither currently holds elective office, but both are active in the party. Guillory had some of the best political ads I’ve seen when he last ran for office, particularly the ones in which he portrayed himself as a cowboy. It is no surprise he was an avid supporter of Higgins.
Mr. Winham, we have a “Guillory” in my area…C. L. Bryant…..joined the Tea Party early on, Preacher who conned his American Baptist Church into joining the Southern Baptist (was later asked to resign this church for unknown reasons), wrote a conservative political book labeling any Black who receives welfare as being “Slaves to the Government”…huge majority of his church folks were poverty ridden and had no other means of livelihood (no matter – if you take welfare, tithe to the church and vote Republican)….last I heard of him, he had a popular conservative talk radio show out of Shreveport, LA. Thankfully, the Black Community seemed to send him on his way but he found fertile ground in the Evangelical, conservative church groups in Shreveport….kinda like Seabaugh, I think. I had the pleasure of telling him that I couldn’t, in good conscience, assist him in securing a federal grant for his church to have an “adult day care center.” My reasoning was that taking federal money would make his church a “slave to the government.”, I remember that he turned on his heel and hurried away….
That’s delightful. LOL
I thought Edith was talking about Hank Johnson, AOC, Tlaib, Pressley,Omar, or Biden at first, but then I realized that when Democrats are stupid, we just play like they did not say what they said. AOC giving lectures on economics is the most absurd thing I have ever listened to. Pressley; let’s forgive everyones rent ! I guess we will pay off mortgages next, right along with student debt.
And, as I recall, La. once was represented by all democrats in the Congress. And that was the beginning of the fall of Louisiana, as every one of them got wealthy at our expense. And now we have a democrat Governor. Well, so far, he has raised taxes $2B to “balance” the budget, largely because of medicaid expansion (by him). He has encouraged lawsuits against the oil industry, our main industry in Louisiana. Now that our economy is crippled by this virus what do you think he will do ? Certainly not cut back.
And Gov Cuomo, the latest darling of the left, complaining about his states’ deficit after telling ILLEGALS he would pay for their education and medical care, and saying incurring more deficits would be irresponsible !!??!! But is is okay if the federal govt just keeps printing money. Right.
And Tom, Higgins was packaged as a “Cajun John Wayne”, and since all men love John Wayne, well….He is no worse than Congressman Cedric Richmond, who has gone out of his way to demonstrate his weak intellect.
And in closing, this is the guy Democrats are going with;https://todaysfive.com/joe-biden-facing-ridicule-after-revealing-he-sits-on-the-toilet-backwards/?fbclid=IwAR1Ial_MPxlwAGeZllh8YlX7Seyj3ETXciIMAqXvnmR-6NtQ9YzDOy4VRD0
Are you swollen with pride Stephen ? Edith ?
And BTW, I have not seen any Democrat step up and say they have a better solution for dealing with pandemic, only second guessing and criticism. Where do you guys stand on fiscal responsibility ? On the Democrat Platform ?
Zoe, Higgins packaged himself as a “Cajun John Wayne.” No one else bought into that ridiculous B.S. In fact, it was one of the things that got him fired as a St. Landry Parish sheriff’s deputy. As for as Cedric Richmond, at least he had the initiative to request an investigation of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Department when no other congressman, including the one in Ackal’s district, had the balls to do so. (You may wish to check to see how many deputies went to prison as the result of the investigation.)
Finally, I see Democratic (and some Republican) governors doing a far better job “dealing” with the pandemic than feeble-minded, lost-at-sea Trump, who is too obsessed with his TV ratings. But really, if all the politicians would step back and let the medical community deal with testing and vaccines, I believe we’d make far better progress. The politicians’ only role should be in setting crowd sizes, closing certain businesses (hair and nail salons) that necessitate close contact, etc.
Ben, not enough went to jail, but most especially, the leader of the pack skated completely. I cannot fathom how his cousin, (former) Judge Haik got him out of it, but apparently forced him (Haik) to retire.Richmond’s only interest was the racial aspect, and he was not concerned with justice; just his normal showboating.
As for Mr. Higgins, he is obviously a good salesman as he sold the tough guy image to his district and somewhat nationally.I did not vote for him because I felt his has some personal issues that bother me; child support in particular.
Most of the Governors are simply asking for federal dollars to bail them our for their total lack of preparedness for any situation that is viral in nature. As for the “feeble minded, lost at sea” comment; I do not see any better solutions than what Trump did anywhere in the world, so evidently you know more than the world leaders. Perhaps the Swedes had the right idea….protect elderly and let everyone assess their own risk.
So Ben, what would you (with the benefit of becoming Captain Hindsight) have done ? And remember, ours is a free society thanks to 1st Amendment.
Oh dear God. Zoe, you’re like a slinky falling down the stairs: entertaining, but you really contribute nothing. So John Bel raised taxes all by himself, did he? Have you forgotten that the legislature has to pass those tax bills and the legislature is, uh… Republican? And what about those fiscal conservatives in Congress who helped Trump double the national debt – before the coronavirus bailout? Zoe, your logic has descended into an endless repetition of weak platitudes that any fourth-grader could recite but might well be ashamed to. Your thought process has all the intellectual depth of Klem Kadiddlehopper (Google him if you don’t remember).
And that link you supplied about Biden: Where the hell did you find that web page? That’s from some wacko nutcase, for sure. Some other stories on the same page: “Ivanka Trump (I thought her name was Kushner, but never mind) is now assisting on coronavirus vaccine research” (god help us), “5 quick tips to induce a lucid sex dream,” “Spicy confessions: ‘Lost control of myself at my younger brothers (sic) high school party.” Top-notch news source there, Zoe.
DJ, that was cute. I loved my Slinky when I was a child. If you do not like my comments, I suggest you simply avoid them. I suspect the truth is you have zero to say except that you dislike Trump to the point of hatred and refuse to say anything nice about anything that he has done. That is your choice and I support your right to feel that way. As for reference to my intellectual depth, I do not see where you are in a position to look down on anyone based on your
tepid commentary. You offer nothing but venom and contempt for those who choose to disagree with your input.
Are you doubting the accuracy of Mr. Biden’s comment ? He, like Trump, is a treasure trove of dumb comments.I believe I made my point about Uncle Joe. It is not my website; I just ran across the article. You likely prefer “Union Thugs” as a news source.
I do not like the 2.4T spending bill that was rushed into nor do I like any deficit spending (partisan or not). But Trump will have to go a long way to equal or surpass your hero Barack Obama in deficit spending. Both parties agreed to do this because they asked everyone to stay home, not work, close business etc. and are trying to help people survive.Perhaps this is something we could learn from Sweden.
I presume that you are a Louisiana resident, and if so, you recognize that the Governor controls the Legislature; even has input with appointing leaders, so our Legislature is hardly independent and really provides zero “check” to executive power. Remember Jindal ? Legislature went along with him as well.
Tell me DJ. what part of the Democrat Platform are you supporting ? Perhaps the socialist aspect (national health care, free college, erase student debt, free rents) or perhaps abortion on demand (up to point of birth), perhaps abolition 2nd amendment? Perhaps the anti-christian aspect. Perhaps the sheer lack of fiscal responsibility (Pelosi wants to give $2K per family per month)?. Perhaps the corruption of our Justice and Intelligence departments? Perhaps open borders? Perhaps opening of prisons ? Perhaps the removal of the 1st amendment ? Who do you want Uncle Joe to select as a running mate (that should be rich).
Zoe, thank you for confirming my insight so promptly!
Yesterday I posted this: “You believe Democrats are opposed to free speech because you believe the lies conservative media tells you about Democrats. For example, all the Democrats I know are strong supporters of the first and second amendments as well as the rest of the constitution. You are probably correct in stating that no sane person would support what you have been told the Democrat platform is. However, what you have been told probably bears little relationship to what actual Democrats believe and support.”
In the last paragraph above you list the positions you have been told are the Democrat platform. First, there IS NO DEMOCRAT PLATFORM until after the convention, or what passes for a convention this year. Second, some of the things you list were positions of Democrat candidates for President, but that does not make them part of the eventual platform. Third, many of the things you mention have NEVER been any part ANY Democrat discussion or news I have ever heard. Fourth, as several Republicans, like John McCain as Presidential candidate, have observed at various times, Democrats are no less patriotic or less supportive of the constitution than Republicans. (In fact, I believe that when you support Moscow Mitch and Putin’s Pal impeached trump, you are supporting those who have put party over patriotism.) So, as I said yesterday, no sane person would support what lying liars have convinced you is the democrat platform.
And no sane person, who hasn’t been brainwashed by the conservative media and impeached trump, would vote for a mentally ill, unsuccessful and incompetent businessman (many bankruptcies), with a long history of cheating people (at least 3500 suits by cheated sub-contractors, Trump University), who delayed and impeded our response to the coronavirus so over 90% of the countries in the word have lower per capita death rates than the USA (documented in a comment last week), who lies very frequently and is deathly afraid of revealing his tax returns.
Zoe, it is the main stream media that is reporting the truth. If they find that a reporter is making stuff up, they fire him or her. Main stream reporting is consistent because there is only one set of actual facts and there are only so many ways you can accurately describe those facts. Government statistics are as accurate as humanly possible. The “deep state” didn’t exist until Trump made it up so he would have someone to blame for his incompetence. I am very glad he spends many hours every day watching television and tweeting. How much more damage could he have done if he were as effective as he claims to be.
But keep ’em coming, Zoe. You’re almost as funny as the Walker chicken.
Truth is painful, isn’t it Buck ?
State a single statement I made that was not factual.
Every single one, Zoe. Every one. But you do keep us informed about what you’re being spoon fed and brainwashed with. Quite informative and entertaining, in a way.
Zoe, you said: “AOC giving lectures on economics is the most absurd thing I have ever listened to.” While I can’t know what absurd things you have listened to, “Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University, majoring in economics and international relations” which makes her qualified to speak on economic issues. Clearly AOC speaking on economic issue is not “absurd” even if you disagree with what is said. The part of your sentence that says AOC lecturing on economics is absurd is not factual.
Jindal cut state spending a lot and cut taxes even more. In his first legislative session, John Bel had to advise the legislature to cut spending and raise taxes by a net total of $1 billion to balance the budget as mandated by the state constitution. After much posturing and fussing, the legislature did what was necessary. And I believe that Medicaid expansion benefits the state financially so no taxes have had to be raised because of that.
So you made several statements that are not factual. You need to find to find sources that don’t lie to you so you won’t be embarrassed again by repeating those lies.
I beg to differ. You said the governor controls the legislature, including committee assignments. Well Edwards’s pick for Speaker in 2016 certainly didn’t fly, did it? And even you have to admit that when legislators are taking their lead from Grover Norquist, it’s not the same agenda being pushed by the governor. In Jindal’s case, legislators were his lapdogs and they got a taste of their power with Edwards and liked it. Just look at how many sessions it took to pass a budget. And now they’ve decided to take their full per diem as if they were in Baton Rouge all those days of the shutdown. Legislators are refusing to wear masks and bucking for reopening the economy even as people are still dying.
Yep, the governor’s in full control of the legislature. Truth is, you can’t control a den of snakes.
Zoe, You have admitted factual errors in the past. If I didn’t think that there was hope for you realizing that you have been mislead, I wouldn’t bother writing these comments. Please keep listening, just as we keep reading your comments.
Hi, Zoe – back on March 27 I sent you the message below in a LA Voice comment, but you did not respond (back of hand to forehead as I swoon with the vapors) so I thought I’d give it another try, to see if this helps you to better understand us librul Dems, from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. Lengthy, but here it is again.
Those who dislike an elected official are not petty, bitter or small minded – just not in agreement with that official, which I believe is a First Amendment right of all Americans. I’d bet you were not a fan of President Obama and probably made some pithy comments about him – did you complain about him because he was a “young black guy”? No one is complaining about trump because he’s old and white – there’s plenty of other things to dislike about trump. (My husband is old and white and so are a lot of people we know and love, so that’s not an issue.)
I’m also guessing that you don’t know a lot of Democrats. You have certainly bought the conservative narrative about what the Democratic Party and individual Democrats believe from your lengthy litany of “beliefs.” I won’t respond to each one, but I’ll tell you this: undocumented aliens are not eligible for federal benefits except certain people (like registered DACA recipients) under certain emergency circumstances where life and public safety are involved; no one supports “open borders;” no one gets pregnant with the intention of saying “whoopee, now I get to have an abortion!”; there is no such thing as elective abortion right before birth (much less after); most Democrats I know don’t ask anyone to confirm their gender before using a public restroom, and don’t care what gender someone else identifies with as long as everyone is treated with dignity, respect and decency; most of the Democrats I know are gun owners; the First Amendment gives you, me, and Tom the right to express ourselves freely and to practice the religion of our choice, and is thus central to a belief in individual and personal freedom; Medicare, which is the very model of socialized medicine in the US, is not free, we pay into it through a payroll tax during our working years and pay a modest monthly premium once retired and covered by it, which is the idea behind M4A.
And anyone who thinks that “if you can’t pay for healthcare you can just die,” as I have been told by several not-Democrats, is beyond selfish and redemption. Come to central America with our mission team and see how people suffer and die from lack of simple medical care for lack of resources. Most of the Democrats I know are deeply religious and attend Christian churches and synagogues, are professionals, teachers, healthcare workers, are employed in the helping professions, stay at home parents who do volunteer work to assist the less advantaged, and believe in the value and dignity of all people.
Like many of the Democratic women I know, I am white, married to a man, a mother, (not a “sperm-bank-using-lesbian”) a church-going Christian and mission team member, gun owner, carbon fuel car owner, omnivore (yep, we eat meat). Also a feminist (textbook definition: any person who believes in the equality of all people), social justice advocate, worked outside the home for over 40 years, raised our children to be independent and to think for and support themselves…pretty much like you and the people you know.
Not long ago, a man I met at a political town hall meeting was shocked – shocked! – to find out I am a Democrat, because he said I “look so normal.” Then he shouted some socialistic demands at the elected official, and we both got a good laugh, then he agreed with me that we are more alike than different.
I hope this helps you better understand who and what Democrats are, once we define ourselves, rather than believing other groups’ false narratives. And while I respectfully disagree with your ideas about who I am and what I believe, I will defend to the death your right to your own opinion (however wrong I think it may be – smile).
“I presume that you are a Louisiana resident, and if so, you recognize that the Governor controls the Legislature; even has input with appointing leaders, so our Legislature is hardly independent and really provides zero “check” to executive power. Remember Jindal ? Legislature went along with him as well.”
Zoe, I am not going to go back and forth with you, as I can see you are head strong. A strong believer in Trump. However, that statement above is probably the most untruthful statement you have ever posted. At least in my eyes.
You presume that the poster is a resident of Louisiana. I am beginning to believe that you are not. The legislature that came in with JBE declared itself as the most independent legislature this state had seen in decades. JBE’s choice for speaker was not voted in by that legislature. Speaker Barras was a compromise candidate. JBE ran into roadblocks in every direction he chose to proceed. The Republican house was in total control. I will admit JBE had a more friendly Senate to work with. As for Jindal, he didn’t have to control the legislature, they were mostly on his side. So I ask, are you a resident of Louisiana?
Cliff, I do not wish to argue with you or anyone else for that matter…we are all trying to get our point of views acknowledged and perhaps accepted. Do you really believe the Governor of Louisiana does not exercise tremendous control over the Legislature ? Our Governor is one of the most powerful in the USA. Yes, they declared themselves independent, but we both know, if they do not dance with the Governor, no projects will happen in their district. I do not believe my statement is untruthful. Our Democrat Governor will always have his way with our Republican legislature because most are not people of conviction.
I am not so much a strong believer in Trump as I am pro USA, pro capitalist, pro Christian, America first, anti-socialist philosophy, pro 1st and 2nd Amendment type person.
And Cliff, although not born here, I have lived here (Acadiana) for past 35 years. I am a registered Republican.
Zoe, I worked for the legislature for almost as long as you have lived here. Now, let me give you a few examples why JBE does not have control of this legislature.
1. His candidate for speaker in his first term did not stand a chance. This term he had no candidate. He had to back the candidate(both of the top two candidates were Replubicans) that was most suitable. The current speaker and speaker pro tem are repubs.
2. Commttee chairmanships and vice chairmanships: Lets look at the the two money committees, Appropriations and Ways and Means. The two most powerful committees in the House. The App. committee has 26 members, of that total 18 are repubs, including the chairman. Why would a governor, who has the control that you think he has, stack this committee with repubs?(Some of these members are elected)
The Ways and Means committee has 17 members of which 11 are repubs, including the chair and vice chair. Again, the same question asked above.
I also chose the House and Govermental Affairs committee because of the fact that all congressional and legislative districts will be redrawn this term. This committee has 17 members of which 11 are repubs, including the chair.
BTW, the republican speaker and speaker pro tem are ex officio members of all 16 standing committees. That is very convenient when you need a quorum to take action on a piece of legislation.(When you are one short of a quorum, you call the speaker or the pro tem to help make the quorum.)
Believe me, JBE had nothing to do with the makeup of these committees.
3. Yesterday, the House and Governmental Affairs committee held a hearing on HCR 58, a concurrent resolution suspending certain provisions of Title 29, relative to the governor’s emergency powers.(I was surprised by the introduction of the resolution. Not because of its content, but because of legislative process issues. A resolution that suspends a law has the effect of law, therefore it has to be prefiled or introduced by a deadline for introduction of legislative items that otherwise should have been prefiled. That deadline had passed. Enough of that)
If JBE had the control that you speak of that resolution would not have received a hearing. Under past governors, it might not have even been referred to committee.
Zoe, HCR 58 passed out of committee yesterday. By a vote of 9 yeas and 7 nays. All 9 yeas were repubs. One Republican voted against it. So, if JBE controlled the legislature as you suggest, how did that resolution get out.
And DJ, try this one ….there are plenty morehttps://www.facebook.com/SeanHannity/videos/2921557371288884/UzpfSTEwMDAwMTk4NTE5MDY3ODoyOTA5Mjg5ODAyNDgwNDk4/
Facebook? Seriously? Hannity? I’ll believe that idiot when pigs fly. Please don’t try and pass him off as a legitimate newsman; he’s a hack.
