“There’s not too many states that I know of that are going up. Almost everybody is headed in the right direction.”
—Donald Trump, during a Fox News town hall on Sunday.
“In reality, new coronavirus cases are increasing in about a third of states, compared with just a few where there has been a sustained decline. A plurality of states are hovering around the same level, with neither a significant uptick nor decrease in daily cases.”
—The Washington Post, on Tuesday, May 5.
“I’d point you back to his long-running mantra of ‘leave no vacancy behind.’”
—Mitch McConnell spokesman David Popp, on Monday, May 4, on McConnell’s requesting that Republican-appointed federal judges nearing retirement step down now so that their successors may be nominated by Trump. [Could it be that McConnell sees the handwriting on the wall that tells him Trump’s days as president and the Republicans’ days as the Senate’s majority party are numbered? Otherwise, why the sudden urgency?]
“The American people may well elect a president who decides to nominate Judge Garland for Senate consideration. The next president may also nominate someone very different. Either way, our view is this: Give the people a voice.”
—Mitch McConnell, on his reasons for blocking Barack Obama’s U.S. Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland in 2016 on the shaky grounds that he didn’t want to confirm an appointment during an election year. [What was that again about Moscow Mitch’s “long-running mantra”?]
“Oh, we’d fill it.”
—McConnell, in a speech to the Paducah, Kentucky, Chamber of Commerce in May 2019, on what would happen if a Supreme Court seat became open in 2020. [No doubt if the roles were reversed, the Democrats would likely resort to the same tactics, which raises this very serious question: How can we trust anything our elected representatives tell us if they can so expeditiously and effortlessly shed their ethics and change the rules for no reason other than self-preservation and self-enrichment? At what point will we decide we no longer wish to be pawns in a giant chess game played by powerful people who don’t give a damn about us?]
I really don’t see how anyone can see McConnell as an honorable public servant. He is ruthless to gain his and his owners’ agenda to the obvious harm to our democracy. He abuses his Senate powers with a certain glee. But, the most dangerous thing he is doing is blocking all of the bills that would protect our elections from cyber attacks. No one has asked him publicly why he is doing this. I haven’t heard an outcry from Senate Democrats. I find this the most disturbing aspect of McConnell’s reign of mafia control of our Senate. Is this his “ace in the hole” to save both Trump and his seat? Putin has done very well under their “public service.” Why isn’t there more public concern and pressure on McConnell to protect our elections and why is he being asked why he doesn’t want to?
So Edith, how did you feel about Harry Reid ? Became very wealthy as a Senator from Nevada. He was extremely partisan as well.Harm to the democracy ? Really??? I believe the democrats are opposed to free speech, not Republicans. No outcry ? I suppose you do not realize Chuck Schumer is a Democrat. He opposes anything the Republicans stand for. If Trump said the sun would rise on Wednesday Schumer would say he is lying.
And I do not think anyone is very concerned about Joe Biden getting elected. The man cannot stand up to a campaign, and most people recognize that.. And besides that, how can any sane American support the Democrat platform ?
Oh, Ms. Zoe you are truly gifted. If Trump told me the sun would rise on Wednesday I would know it was going to be cloudy and raining. Just like when he said that hurricane Dorian was going to hit Alabama. And the coronavirus was going from fifteen to one. As one of our readers said a while back, you are like the tree that thinks the axe is his friend. But, keep ’em coming. We love to hear from you.
Zoe, When Moscow Mitch and most of the rest of the Republican Senators blatantly ignore their oath of office and the special oath that was part of the Impeachment proceedings, when they ignore the Russian influence in the 2016 election that was part of what got impeached trump elected, when they do nothing to stop the Russians from influencing this year’s elections, when their primary focus has been to confirm judges who will make ruling based on distorted interpretations, not the law, yes, this is a significant threat to our democracy.
You believe Democrats are opposed to free speech because you believe the lies conservative media tells you about Democrats. For example, all the Democrats I know are strong supporters of the first and second amendments as well as the rest of the constitution. You are probably correct in stating that no sane person would support what you have been told the Democrat platform is. However, what you have been told probably bears little relationship to what actual Democrats believe and support.
As a general rule, when anyone is trying to influence you by telling you what their opponent believes, they are very likely lying or distorting. When a “news” source is spends more time giving you their opinion about how evil the other side is than they do reporting the activities of the day, that may be the clue you need to go elsewhere to get more factual reporting.
Zoe give us facts for what you put in your post. You asked how any sane American could vote for the Democrat platform, well I would not support a Republican’s platform supported by an unbalanced president.
