“I do not understand, and my Administration will not treat, this provision as permitting the [inspector general] to issue reports to the Congress without the presidential supervision required by the Take Care Clause, Article II, section 3.”
—Donald Trump, on Friday after signing the coronavirus aid bill as he sought to assert presidential authority over the Office of Inspector General, which is supposed to be independent and which is supposed to provide oversight into how the $400 billion is to be spent on corporate relief. Trump, in turn, said on Friday that he would be consulting with Wall Street executives to make some of the decisions. What could possibly go wrong?
Well we can place a safe bet that if he does this, when the time comes for another “rescue package” there will be more restrictions on him than this current legislation. Never mind the fact that he will be breaking the law if he does what he says. Of course, it will not be his first time, nor his last. You can bet safely on that too. But I have to make a confession. I used to believe that I had considerable will power. Then Louisiana Voice started posting Trump’s imbecilic quotes. While I was aware of almost all of them, seeing them posted individually on a daily basis, I become like the bull charging the matador’s red cape (bulls BTW are color blind but become agitated by the movement of the cape); which is what the Trump quotes do to me. I am unable to resist commenting.
And that is good. The next to worst thing is to become apathetic. The worst thing is to fully accept and support his every action.
Politico reports: The legislation establishes a “special inspector general” to review and investigate loan decisions made by the treasury secretary as part of the coronavirus relief effort, an accountability measure that was a central part of Democrats’ demands to shore up transparency in the bill. The provision requires the inspector general to notify Congress if he or she is “unreasonably refused or not provided” any information.
“I will be the oversight,” trump stated.
From the guy who brought us Trump University and the trump foundation, both shut down by the courts for fraud and financial shenanigans.
The relief bill prohibits funds going to businesses owned by the president, vice president, cabinet members and members of Congress – and their families. Where there’s money involved, you can bet his hand will be in that cookie jar. “I will be the oversight” means “watch me grab lots of money and there’s nothing you can do about it because republicans in congress will literally let me get away with murder.” The virtual sound of shots fired on Fifth Avenue…
We have observed Trump long enough to know that he is deadly serious about preserving him and his own and profiting from every opportunity. We must not forget that this Republican Congress (McConnell) have given Trump the “keys to our kingdom.” We cannot make excuses; we cannot try to find the “good in Trump….there isn’t any. We can only hope that enough Americans understand what is at stake and vote these Trump/Republicans out. I fear apathy and petty politics will be our challenge.
Well said Ms. Herring! Now I’m just saying, our Republican congressional delegation may be in cahoots with the Russians or at least their associates of oligarchs to “keep the keys to our kingdom”. my quote. Money (power) is the key.And Brad Perscale will spend 90+ million to keep the base fired up. Apathy is a challenge, and petty politics is really not petty, we cannot become “them” by using their tactics, but we must stay strong and truthful, and never give up or give in to tyranny.
