“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or anyone else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about anyone else.”
—Theodore Roosevelt.
Excellent – unfortunately, most Trump supporters see nothing wrong with him, including the fact he is inept, dishonest and dangerously unhinged. They see themselves as patriots and the rest of us as traitors. If he agreed, their hero would intone (or tweet), “Sad.” And, he would, uncharacteristically, be correct.
If last night’s dreadful performance and lack of useful messaging does not provoke a wide critical response and questions about competence and ability to comprehend and respond to a crisis, nothing will.
Most, I will not say all, Trump supporters, along with Trump, remind me of the the words from Colonel Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson) in the 1992 movie “A Few Good Men” when he says, “You can’t handle the truth!” Facts do not matter. And when I tried to explain something to a friend of mine a few days ago (Trump supporter) and I said to him, “don’t take my word for it, Google it” he replied “everything on the internet is fake news.” Might as well have been talking to a stone wall. He didn’t want to hear the facts. He didn’t want to know the truth. All I could do was simply smile and walk away.
I totally agree with T Roosevelt on most things he said and this is one. Stephen, I have not ever heard of anyone saying the man(Trump) is perfect. Unhinged and inept, I would disagree with.
You voting for Bernie or Biden ? Now those would be the very definition of inept, unhinged, and dishonest. And Earth, do you prefer Obama approach to virus; wait six months and allow over 1,000 deaths before you react ?
I guess we lost that little piece of common ground we had briefly. I am voting for Biden and accept his limitations as of almost infinitely lesser magnitude than those of the current President.
You support dementia for President ? The more he is in the public eye, the more incompetent Biden will look. People (like you) will vote for him simply because he is a democrat. Reminds me of a friend who told me if Jesus were republican and Hitler a democrat, Hitler had his vote.
I am always astounded when an intelligent person supports a party whose platform is; open borders, free benefits for illegal aliens, illegal aliens voting, eliminate jail for criminals of non-violent nature, free college, cancellation of student debt, abolish Electoral College, free abortion, medicare for all (one pay), not screening immigrants, not accepting “binary sex”, rejection od 2nd amendment rights and the list goes on..
Good luck with that. The majority of the United States does not agree with the democrat party of today (yes, I know Hillary won popular vote, but we have all seen electoral maps). I guess we will still be discussing this for 4.5 more years.
Of course Zoe, that’s a big fat lie pushed out by PJ Media. It was on Facebook and “The post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed”
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/obama-wait-swine-flu-n1h1/
https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2020/mar/04/facebook-posts/president-obama-declared-h1n1-public-health-emerge/
Fred, you are correct. I suppose I was tripped by the “National Emergency” versus the “public health emergency”. No excuse for repeating an untruth.
zoe, I did not see your reply until just a short time ago. Thanks for that. 🙂
Well, Zoe, you know Trump wasn’t exactly out front with a response to the virus threat. What was it he said again? Oh, yeah….”go to work. The virus will disappear in April. It’s a Democrat hoax meant to bring down my presidency.” And the Republican mouthpiece Rush Limbaugh: “It’s just a common cold. No one dies from a cold.”
Really strange that he (a) pushed the CDC doctors into the background and (b) waited until Wall Street tanked before he became concerned and then tried to claim “it isn’t an economic crisis,” to which I would suggest that it’s both a health AND and an economic crisis.
And again, true to form, you couldn’t resist invoking Obama’s name. My god, you’ll be cursing Obama as they lower your coffin into the ground. You’re just programmed that way. I find it curious that in the defense of Trump, his supporters invariably chant “Obama, Obama, Obama.”
Neither am I particularly excited about Biden or Bernie. But I sure as hell ain’t excited about Trump. Apprehensive, maybe. Fearful, of course. Angry, you bet. Excited, no. Would have preferred a little younger opponent and I hope Biden will have the good sense to choose a young, healthy, smart veep. Now if he would just choose Michelle Obama, Trump’s head would explode—and probably yours, too.
Yes, Zoe, I do prefer the Obama approach to dealing with “the virus.” President Obama declared a national health emergency in 2009 eleven days after H1N1 swine flu was detected in the US. Coronavirus was identified in December 2019 and made it to the US in January. It’s mid March and we are still waiting to for trump to make emergency declarations (maybe today) and other decisions that would enable government agencies and healthcare providers to protect our people. Right now the administration is refusing to allow Medicaid to provide coronavirus care for disadvantaged people with no access to healthcare, which actually puts us all at risk. So yes, I’ll take the Obama approach to public health care and safety over this self-centered, obstructionist response, any time.
To Earthmother – tragically, your last 2 words sums it up – nothing will. The proof is in Zoe’s comment.
A tale of two leaders:

Zoe, does Mr. Trump inspire confidence? Post 9/11 GWB rose to the occasion and brought all of us together during the crisis (some of the methods used subsequently and portions of the so-called “Patriot Act” were later found unconstitutional). My point is that W inspired confidence and guidance, unlike the present occupant of the White House, who has consistently denied and undermined science. And no, I am not excited about either Biden or Bernie, wish for better choices.
Tom, I have a comment in moderation. It had two links in it. If you could release it I would appreciate it.
Thank you Tom. Much appreciated.
I am excited about everything! This Republic will hold until the next anti-Christ emerges or a plague. I am grateful I got to play. Trump and the Repugblicants are necessary evils we as humans must love and hope they will change. ( I think I remember that from some church) CJG- Caught the play “a Few Good Men” on Broadway after Desert Storm, loved the “you can’t handle the truth” and loved the arrest of the Col. .Also saw Marla Maples? pregnant with Trump’s what’s her name dance and sing half naked and yes she looked great. love always ron thompson
