“With the tremendous progress we have made over the past three years, America is now energy independent.”
–Donald Trump, falsely boasting of America’s energy independence. [The U.S. continues to import energy. In 2018, the U.S. imported about 9.94 million barrels per day of petroleum from nearly 90 countries, according to an Energy Information Agency report, with 43 percent coming from Canada and 16 percent from Persian Gulf countries.]
Two lies in one sentence. No progress under him in the past three years and we are not energy independent.

As a factual matter, we will likely never not import oil. And as long as OPEC sells oil cheaper than we can pump it, it would be economically logical to import oil. We are, without a doubt, more independent than we were only a few years ago and could easily deal with an “oil embargo” such as happened in the 70’s.To say there is no progress in oil production is not a true nor accurate statement. The mere fact that OPEC (and Russia) keeps lowering prices and production is proof of that.
Yes, we are more oil independent than in the ’70s, but the only person I’ve heard say we are energy independent (without any qualification) is Trump, and like you, Zoe, I take issue with that.
Unless we have cut off Venezeula I beleive much comes from there. I am aware that for transportation costs crude goes from Alaska to Asia (I think Japan). That does not mean we are a net exporter but for the transportation cost think one boat to asia and a replacement ship from Venezeula to the refineries on our gulf coast. As we are living in a well known “Oil State” I would suggest that we, more than even our MS neighbors should know these details if to only not reinforce some false information that may come our way. As to the fact that we import oil, I am guessing that with the export of Natural Gas, in BTU’s that we might be getting close to being a zero net energy exporter / importer.
As to Donald Trump he has earned my distain, it wasn’t just given to him, he had to earn it, fack check after exhasting fact check, In short his actions could be discribed, in my opinion as what would be in the best interest of Vladimir Putin and Russa. Note any US action, any dustup, any criticism at all about Russa’s entier govertment resigning and Putin becoming permanate head – dictator / Stalin or Hitler…..not a word. Louisiana invested even sending legal deligations to help set up their judiciary after the fall. Putins great oppoent as he morphed from his predecessor, the former mayor of Moscow, to his current status, former Secretary of state, Hillary Clinton. If he is active in undermining in the United States, one can only imagine what disruption and undermining he is doing in Europe. Have a great day!.
