“Democracy is the most fragile thing on earth, for what does it rest upon? You and me, and the fact that we agree to maintain it. The moment either of us says we will not, that’s the end of it. It doesn’t rest on anything but us; it doesn’t rest on armed force, the moment it does, it isn’t democracy.”
—Allen Drury, author of best-seller Advise and Consent.
“I just want to do it. I’m the president. Can’t I do it?”
—Donald Trump, on learning it was the role of Congress, not the president, to impose tariffs on foreign goods.
I am convinced neither Trump nor his supporters care one whit about democracy. He cares only about himself. His supporters care only about a return to a fictional time that exists only in their minds.
Based on my observations of about thirty supporters who are friends of mine, very few of them see things through the big picture. Their perspectives are myopic. Their historical knowledge is limited. These are people who do not want change. They believe we have gone “too far” in this country with government social programs. It has become a “give away” society. And the “liberals” are to blame. But if you tried to take away their Social Security or Medicare Benefits they would be in an uproar. And you are so right, Mr. Winham, that they live in a “fictional time that exists only in their minds.” We could write a book for them about what “progress” is all about, but it would only be viewed as liberal propaganda.
The second quote, by Trump, reflects his lack of understanding of our form of government and the distinction between presidents and kings. He really thinks presidents can do anything they want.

Fayette: We have been told by many mental health professionals that Trump suffers from an incurable mental and emotional dysfunction called “malignant narcissism.” He really does think that he is “king” and will be ruthless to protect his kingly power…And, sadly, this Republican Senate, except for Romney, actually “crowned him their king”. The problem is that everyone knows this and there seems to be nothing that can be done about it…sadly, we will all pay for this!
So true, Fayette. And the republicans in congress, who swore an oath to uphold the constitution, not a king, not only refuse to disabuse trump of his notion, but they actually feed his delusions of grandeur. It seems that one group has decided not to uphold our democracy, which now appears to be on life support. Code Blue,
