“Cassidy, Kennedy, Scalise, Johnson and the rest really did earn the plaudits they’re getting from the White House. The president couldn’t have created this demoralizing new reality without them.”
—Stephanie Grace, Baton Rouge Advocate, Feb. 8, 2020.
We should hold the people in Congress allowing this to happen in greater contempt than President Trump who is the same person he has always been and will always be.
Demoralizing is right… tax cuts will provide the richest 20 percent of taxpayers with $205 billion in 2020, which is 72 percent of the law’s benefits that go to U.S. taxpayers. Huge tax cuts for corporations. No infrastructure improvements taking place as promised. Stealing from military expenditures (which we pay for) to build a wall with Mexico (what happened to Mexico paying for it?). Cutting $800B over a decade for Medicaid. In court to void the Affordable Care Act (which includes coverage for pre-existing conditions). Has already started talking about cutting Social Security. Adding almost a trillion dollars a year to the federal deficit which will be over $24 trillion in 2020. Paying $478B (10% of the federal budget) in interest payments on borrowed money in 2020. The list almost has no end. Frankly, it’s quite a bit more than just demoralizing.
You are exactly right. Now all you have to do is convince the voters to elect Bernie or Elizabeth maybe even Joe or Mayor Pete and let’s try their socialist approach. Hell man I would not mind that at all.
To Ronald: The major difference being that Bernie or Elizabeth or Joe or Mayor Pete are telling us what they intend to do while Orange Hair lied through his tanning booth lips that he was going to pay off the national debt, make Mexico pay for the wall, not tamper with Medicaid or Social Security and enact tax reform. The tax “reform” of course was the huge tax break for the super wealthy and corporations.
You are also right Doremus. Let’s go with socialism and tax the top 20% of the wealth in the country and we can enjoy the good life for a change.
Ronnie: You’re actually being a bit conservative with your 20%, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the wealthy 1% and the corporations to pay their fair share and ease the burden on the rest of us. You can be a glib and as sarcastic as you like but it doesn’t change the fact that the wealthy and the corporations, with the money to do so, have the best tax attorneys and make all the right political contributions to enact and take advantage of generous tax loopholes that the rest of us can’t afford (and don’t qualify for) and so end up bearing the load that others should be sharing. The tax rates on the books and the rates actually paid by corporations and the top 1% are dramatically different. The average taxpayer (you and I and the rest of the middle class) pay an actual rate of approximately 27% in federal income taxes. By the time corporations and the wealthy worm their way through all the loopholes, exemptions, credits, etc., they end up paying about 11%. If that inequity were eliminated, there would be no need for a 20% tax.
Those are the cold, hard facts.
I am talking about the top 20% wealthiest people and corporations paying their fair share, not just paying a 20% tax rate. I’m a lifelong Democrat and I have always been very conservative and I believe in capitalism. It will be hard for me to support a socialist candidate. It is just a shame that all the candidates, both parties, are only concerned about themselves.
I think that much of any candidate’s platform will be refined, reworked and amend once they become the Party Candidate. Any president will have a “hard row to hoe” getting everything they want. Aren’t we stronger for exploring many options, debating the good and the bad and pulling together to demand the best ideas and discarding the worst. Isn’t this what political campaigns are all about….I really believe this. No president gets everything they want and even then there are many compromises…
Reminds me of the Jindal administration. The Rep cabal in Baton Rouge went along with Jindal’s policies, enabling and rubber stamping. Folks blamed Jindal, but he could not implement his cuts withoug legislative approval. We have seen this playbook before in Louisiana and Kansas, does not end well. Trump cannot implement his agenda without the consent of Mitch and his minions..Take note–there is plenty of blame to be shared.
.
OH, I am constantly reminding critics of JBE that no governor can do the things they accuse him of all alone. If they don’t like what he does that is made into laws, this Republican Legislature had to approve it….
I agree this is so very demoralizing and frustrating. What’s more demoralizing is the fact that our delegation represents the views of a majority of their constituents. That’s where the rubber meets the road.
Tom, I wish there was an option to just “like” a post without having to write a reply….? If and missing this, I plead….DUH!
Well, since I’m not on Facebook and LouisianaVoice got kicked off Facebook, I suppose that’s not possible. But you can always just say “Like” in the comments section (or copy and paste a “Thumbs Up emoji in the comment section.

I love it! I can still recognize the lies or actual facts somewhat distorted. I am not afraid like Carville and it is our fault if we can’t vote Trump and most of the Republicans out. La. is a big time RED state and I will not give up, and by the way even if we get all Democrats, in every office, we will still have the problem of communicating our PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES, fear, ignorance, and prejudices. So far, I have not met any Republican or Democrat, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, etc who can completely erase what I have learned in the military, and more importantly, home, church and school.(perhaps a couple of wives). Keep learning and keep loving, love always ron Thompson.
