“This is a blue-collar boom.”
—Donald Trump, SOTU address, Feb. 4, 2020.
“The manufacturing sector is in a technical recession, and only 9,000 manufacturing jobs have been gained since June. Job growth has slowed in many “blue-collar” sectors such as transportation, construction and mining.”
—Washington Post Fact Check, Feb. 5, 2020.
“Since my election, the net worth of the bottom half of wage earners has increased by 47 percent — three times faster than the increase for the top 1 percent.”
—Trump SOTU address, Feb. 4, 2020.
“People in the bottom half have essentially no wealth — just 1.6 percent of the nation’s wealth — as debts cancel out whatever assets they might have. The top 5 percent hold more than 70 percent of all net worth in the United States.”
Washington Post Fact Check, Feb. 5, 2020.
“In the Senate, we have confirmed a record number of 187 new federal judges.”
—Trump SOTU, Feb. 4, 2020.
“It’s not a record. Trump has a long way to go to have appointed the most federal judges. Reagan has the record, with 383, followed by Bill Clinton with 378 and then Obama with 329.”
Washington Post Fact Check, Feb. 5, 2020.
“We will always protect patients with preexisting conditions.”
—Trump SOTU, Feb. 4, 2020.
“In an ongoing court case, the Trump administration is supporting a total repeal of the Affordable Care Act — including its guarantee that patients can’t be denied coverage for preexisting conditions.(emphasis mine) Republicans in Congress tried for years to repeal the whole law. Trump has not presented a plan to cover the gaps in case the court challenge is successful. Moreover, he has promoted short-term plans (which he touted in his speech) that are not required to cover preexisting conditions.” (emphasis mine)
—Washington Post Fact Check, Feb. 5, 2020.
“Forty million American families have an average $2,200 extra thanks to our child tax credit.”
—Trump POTUS, Feb. 4, 2020.
“The child tax credit has existed since 1997, and it has been expanded since then, including in the recent tax law. In 2016, under Obama, 35 million American families took the tax credit, with an average benefit of over $1,500 a year. So there’s only been a modest increase (in part because of inflation).”
—Washington Post Fact Check, Feb. 5, 2020.
And, I still have Trump supporters demanding that I cite just one lie from Trump’s SOTU address. I do….they just ask again. Therein lies our problem…
He probably told the truth more times in this SOTU address than in any speech so far [a very low bar], but I guess whoever wrote the speech (read word-for-word by him) had to throw in these whoppers to give it authenticity.
P. S. With regard to the “blue collar boom”, the “failing” New York Times reports:
“Economists say the hefty tariffs Mr. Trump has placed on China have encouraged American consumers to purchase goods from other countries and have not led to an American manufacturing renaissance.
“Tariffs to date have clearly had a significant impact on imports from China,” said Brad Setser, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. “They equally clearly have not led to a stronger U.S. manufacturing sector.”
The Associated Press conducted a complete review of President Trump’s remarks given in Tuesday’s State of the Union address. They found a 96% level of accuracy in Trump’s remarks. This is as reported Wednesday morning on WWL radio in New Orleans. Enjoy your TDS…as well as the re-election of Donald John Trump in November.
Outlaw 53: Afraid Lynda Ingram “gotcha” on this one. And I bet she can find Ukraine on the map quicker than you can. There is indeed a pandemic of TDS, but it’s not affecting the ones you think, and most definitely not in the way you believe it is. (Hint: mirror)
Perhaps you should read the AP Fact Check article outlaw53. It says that the SOTU address was built on falsehoods and exaggerations, and it includes no percentage regarding truthfulness or lack thereof. If WWL did report what you say, it was their own spin. https://apnews.com/3750c39f92c817a6790098be323142df
What maddens me most about his deceits and exaggerations is that he harms so many of his neediest believers. Those poor white people who can barely make ends meet swallow his lies wholeheartedly to their own detriment. But Trump knows that few of these supporters are going to fact check him anyway. Unfortunately, as we know, it wouldn’t make any difference to them. So in the end they are cutting their noses to spite their faces as the old saying goes. Truly sad.
Several weeks ago Mr. Winham recommended the PBS Documentary “The Dictator’s Playbook” which you can now watch on Amazon. Trump is following all of the usual steps Mussolini, Hitler, Hussein, Franco and others used to gain absolute power such as (1) Creating a culture of fear (2) Cult of personality (3) Silence the free press (4) Propaganda (5) Create an enemy…and so on. Well worth watching. None of these dictators survived, but the price ordinary people paid along the way was, shall we say, monstrous.
