I’m going to get called a Hillary lover (I’m not, by any stretch; I find her strident and insincere) and an Obama apologist (I’m not; I felt he was an ineffective president—though he did have a Republican Congress to deal with and a Senate President who vowed no Obama Supreme Court nominee would be confirmed, which strikes me as a bit narrow-minded, more than a little bigoted and bigly divisive).
So, go ahead, give it your best shot but I’m still going to say this and I will not back down:
Mr. Frump may deny it (and he no doubt will—he takes no responsibility for his actions because despots never do), but the cold, hard truth is he has fostered, promoted, encouraged, applauded, and otherwise abetted this irrational behavior that resulted in suspicious packages (possibly explosives) being sent to the homes of the Clintons and the Obamas and the Time-Warner/CNN offices. As of Wednesday afternoon, at least seven explosive devices addressed to prominent liberals were intercepted by authorities. You can lay these incidents at the feet of our POTUS (Prevaricator of the United States), Donald Trump.
This is what happens when you have a damned fool spewing his rhetoric of hatred, bigotry, ignorance, and unsupported claims, and who is followed and adored by millions of other damned fools afflicted with the same herd mentality of bigotry, hatred, and ignorance—and it’s only going to get worse.
How else do you explain the remarks of two so-called “Christians” in a recent conversation in which one said Trump “has never offended me” (Seriously? Never?) and the other who wished aloud that Hurricane Willa which slammed Mexico’s west coast on Tuesday would hit the migrant caravan headed toward the U.S. “and kill them all.” Those are direct quotes from a single conversation.
And, in case you didn’t get it the first time, they profess to be devout Christians.
Is this really the way Christians are expected to think, say, and act?
Oh…, I’m sorry. That’s the Pat Robertson Christian doctrine.
He’s the one, you will recall, who said of the political crisis over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi:
“You’ve got one journalist. You’ve got $100 billion worth of arms sales.” He said we need to focus on the important things, adding, “You don’t blow up an international alliance over one person.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the entire concept of Christianity based upon the life and death of “one person”?
“Correct me if I’m wrong….” OK….you’re wrong. Like the majority of affected liberals, you strain to see through your own bias to see what ordinary people see in your President ( yes, as much as you hate to admit it….he IS your President ). I wonder why any liberal cannot simply see the good for what it is….and criticize what is outside of your liberal philosophy as under your expectations? Oh….I remember….the President is a “devil”, a racist ( funny he wasn’t known for that when he supported Al Sharpton, the Clintons, and others prior to 2016 ), and any number of other things. Please…try to be objective…or simply fold up your journalistic tent once more.
See how easy it is to predict these kneejerk reactions? I said I would be called a Hillary lover and predictably, instead of offering specifics in your rebuttal, you rolled out the old reliable “liberal” label as your response to everything I said. I could have written your response for you and I wouldn’t have been off by more than a few words.
You need to re-read the post. I was asking for correction on my interpretation of Christianity. And as for the rest of your response, you take the same, tired, old tactic of thinking that you can label someone a “liberal,” and that’s the end of the argument. Unlike you, I understand and appreciate the fact that there are two sides to every issue and sometimes I come down on the Republican side but you, of course, choose to ignore that.
I could give you a laundry list of the dark side of Trump but instead I suggest that you read any number of thoroughly-documented books about his cheating contractors, students, and investors, his harassment of women and minorities, his bankruptcies and yes, his Russian connections. They’re there for anyone with an open mind to read. And they are not “fake news” or a “witch hunt.”
Why can’t I see the good? Probably for the same reason you most likely refused to try to see the good in any Democrat. Yes, Hillary was damaged goods and I didn’t like her. But you would lump all Democrats into a single bag and throw them out with yesterday’s garbage. At least I can see the good in many Republicans and as I’ve stated here many, many times, I was a Republican dating back to the 1970s—until the party left me. I can’t endorse a sell-out to corporate interests at the expense of the middle class. Apparently you can.
Yes, unfortunately, he is my president. That doesn’t mean I have to support him. Patriotism, sir, is support of your country and the principles it is supposed to represent. It is NOT blind loyalty to any president. And don’t you DARE ever question my patriotism. I served my country in the military during the Vietnam era. I didn’t get a deferment for a stone bruise, much less a half-dozen.
And while I’m at it, you’re trying to make my post about Hillary and liberals. It isn’t. If you would put your emotions on hold and try to be rational, you would see I was writing about a bat-s**t crazy Loony Tunes president who fires up his rabid base by mocking handicapped reporters, praising congressmen who body-slam reporters, call the press the enemy of the people, praising murderous dictators as “great leaders,” and leading chants of “lock her up.” That’s what the post was about—a president who resorts to juvenile playground taunts instead of trying to exhibit any signs of true leadership.
One more thing. In case you’re not aware, this is a blog and by definition, it is under no obligation to be objective. I have opinions and I jolly well will express them. If that’s a problem for you, I suggest you seek your reading material elsewhere.
Your post proves that we live in alternate realities in a deeply divided country. Tom has done a good job of rebuttal, but I have learned arguments about President Trump are futile. As I have said many times before, I base my belief he is a poor president who is leading this country in a terrible direction on things he does and says that are clearly documented on audio and video and in his tweets several times a day every single day. These things do not require interpretation – they stand on their own.
That said, I do trust some sources of information more than others. According to several respected polls, at least 40% of Americans support President Trump, an authoritarian who actively reinforces many of his supporters’ prejudices and misconceptions and presents his own version of the truth. I wonder how many Germans supported Hitler for the same reasons?
In the last open German election before Hitler became Germany’s leader, his party got 44% of the vote according to Wikipedia. He was able to solidify support of similar parties to become Chancellor. According to one source, “There are indicators that Hitler’s popularity peaked in 1939 at somewhere close to 80, or 90% just before the war and fell well below 50% as the war progressed.” [https://upload.democraticunderground.com/10029498303]. Needless to say, his support shrank continuously after the war and very few people today believe he was a good man or that he led Germany in a good direction.
Among the oldest truisms is: “If we learn nothing from history we are doomed to repeat it.” [The original quote was allegedly, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.]”
Everybody I know wanted change. Most wanted positive change. Those who see things my way don’t believe we are getting it. Those who see things your way do. History will reveal the truth, but it will be too late to change it by then.
Well stated, Mr. Aswell.
Just an added note: McConnell vowed at the beginning of Obama’s first term to make him a one-term president. Fast Forward. I noticed on Facebook pages for Cassidy & Johnson, Trump supporters have quickly blamed Democrats for masterminding these package bombings. They all claim that Democrats are doing this to gain votes…I find it interesting for 2 reasons: 1..They came on so quickly with the blame others position and 2. They are all saying the same thing. How well organized is the Trump Train. Immediately, they give the same responses that he would give: it is them, they are ugly, dangerous mobs, they are lawless and will stoop to anything to win, etc. etc. etc. This is the thing that disturbs me the most. This seems like effective, organized, successful mind control without thoughtful reason right here in Louisiana and that is a scary thing.
Well, Edith, that certainly sounds like collusion to me. Maybe it’s the Russians. Some Republicans are also saying the caravan of refugees headed toward the U.S. is also a Democratic ploy.
Trump, by the way, in opposing sanctions against Saudi Arabia, has coughed up the old “save American jobs” routine but he can’t seem to keep the numbers straight. He’s gone from the potential loss of 300,000 American jobs if we cancel our arms contract with them to 500,000, to 600,000 and last night on the news, it had swollen to a million.
The man is a walking job creator!
I have one basic rule of thumb: If Trump says it, it’s pure hogwash. B.S. “Fake News.”
He has all the mental cohesiveness of a sack full of rats in a burning meth lab.
Amen, Edith!!
I agree on the Christianity. The man is not following Christ. The only reason evangelicals and some Catholics supported him was hope for a conservative SCOTUS that would repeal Roe v Wade. These people believe abortion is murder as much as the school shootings. I cannot support his mouth or his behavior. He spews disrespect of everyone in sight. A follower of Jesus will never, except in an occasional lapse, call people vulgar names nor degrade them. These are all people for whom Christ died. We send missionaries to all those countries of Central America. Now when circumstances bring them to us – especially the children, I hear of few, if any, churches grasping the opportunity for ministry. In one of his earlier impromptu interviews, Trump replied to a question about his asking forgiveness, that he had nothing to be forgiven for. Both Carter and Bush admitted sins. In fact, to join a Christian church, you have to confess yourself a sinner, seeking to be saved by grace. I’m an independent who leans conservative, but hates political platforms. Somebody start a common sense party, please?
Bravo Tom! I so agree about the so-called “Christians.” As for Trump, I’d love to have Hillary or Obama in his place right now! A member of my own family says the violence right before the elections is nothing (seriously?) compared to the violent acts of liberals all the months previous…. I have not received an answer to what those “violent acts” of liberals were. They just parrot the crap he spews.
Wasn’t the assassination of 1 man, Crown Prince Ferdinand, the impetus for the War to end all Wars, as well?
Absolutely!
As an interested reader and a New Yorker – We in the melting pot have known
who and what President Wham Bam is, was, and has been. It seems that the USA has a presidential carbuncle. By dancing on the edge of catastrophe the country is compelled to step to a renaissance or call the experiment in democracy a failure. When asked what kind of government the founding father’s were giving “us” Benjamin Franklin said ” A democracy-if you can hold it.”
Not exactly. He said a republic, which is a modified democracy.
