Yes and Edwards is the most qualified to be our state treasurer. Edwards has a masters degree in accounting from Tulane plus a law degree from Loyola. Schroder possesses a bachelors degree in criminal justice. You tell me who is better qualified to properly oversee our state treasury.

Edwards has an admirable background in every way and only lacks the kind of experience and knowledge that would help him hit the ground running. However, his credentials are excellent and he could certainly provide a fresh approach to the job.

Schroder and other candidates pitched their personal philosophies as a reason to vote for them. Those might be important, but they are not directly related to the actual duties of the State Treasurer/banker.

I have to say I was more than a little offended, if not disgusted, when I got the email blast from the Louisiana Democratic Party asking us to make calls to “get the vote out for Derrick.” Where was the party when Derrick entered the race and desperately needed the support of his party? His qualifications didn’t change. So what did? Is the party attempting to now get in front of his parade because it is possible for him to win?

I hope there is a reasonable turnout. I am going to vote, but, frankly, am still on the fence and I think the turnout in New Orleans (where there is an important election other than this one) and on the north shore will wind up determining the winner.

  If you check Neil Riser’s campaign finance reports, you’ll see that he made some large payments to major Democratic party groups in New Orleans. Some were specifically for endorsements and others were for campaign events and services. These groups must have been laughing all the way to the bank, as their endorsements did Riser no good.
  
  Maybe other Democratic groups in the state took Riser’s money, too, and that’s why the state party did not give Edwards its endorsement and backing in the primary.

RE: Low Voter Turnout

When you look at the choices of self-selected, self-servants who sign up to run for elective offices, it’ hard to fault citizens for being uninspired to vote.

What honest, intelligent man or woman would want to have his/her finances publicly disclosed, have his/her name dragged through the mud in a campaign, finance his/her campaign or beg for contributions without promising favors, and then, if elected, have to deal with the a$$holes already in office in the legislative or executive branches of government?

Adam is correct in linking Riser’s expense reports to political groups in NO that are connected to elected “Democrats” who include State Senators: Wesley Bishop, Troy Carter, J P Morrell, Karen Carter-Peterson (Chair of the State Party) and others. Members of the State Central Committee met and voted unanimously to endorse Derrick on 10/28/17, the first opportunity available. Rules require an endorsement to pass the Executive Committee prior to a vote by the whole body. When leadership controls the Executive Committee it controls the whole group. About half of the members who voted to endorse also signed petitions to censure those who violated by-laws by openly supporting a Republican.

Of the pseudo-Democratic NO organizations supporting Riser the BOLD organization took the most money, $15,000 to list Riser atop their ballot. It was founded by Carter-Peterson’s father. She was a board member many years and continues that affiliation. BOLD certainly should not pretend to be Democratic Party linked having endorsed Riser and other Republicans.

As an elected member of both parish and state Democratic committees I am working to replace leadership with true Democrats who will work for people rather than take money to betray them. Until we replace party leadership we will not be able to advance that work. Current rules do not prevent elected officials from serving in state party leadership but they should. A legislator who must compromise with the other party’s members to gain support should not be in control of the state party apparatus.

But wait, there’s more about BOLD. The organization supported Bobby Jindal in 2003 when he ran against Kathleen Blanco and lost. Here is the payment in his finance report found in Ethics Board archives:

I prefer Mr. Edwards because he is the best qualified for this job.

The main reason I will support him is because he is disabled and will do everything he can to keep his job. I highly respect the man.
