“I think it’s fundamentally wrong. And I think that’s exactly the kind of behavior that undermines confidence of government in general and the Legislature in particular. That (a 1994 lawsuit) was something that was confected to add accountability and transparency to this legislative process after the scandals of the mid-1990s. And what we’re finding is that they had their fingers crossed.”
—Attorney Rafael Goyeneche, president of the New Orleans Metropolitan Crime Commission, commenting on House Clerk Butch Speer’s refusal to release student applications for Tulane legislative scholarships.

At least the mainstream local media seems to be picking up this ball! John Maginnis actually brought it up last week on the Uninformed Sources on WYES – usually featuring the opinions of Hear no Evil, See No Evil, & Speak No Evil when it comes to goings on under the Jindal administration. Even some of the politically connected must be out of the loop on these legislative scholarships for Tulane. Otherwise, the fact that NOTHING has changed on this since the last Legislative Scholarship Scandal in 1993 would continue to be the LA Legislature’s best kept secret. Guess this scandal will do much to explain the indifference of legislators to skyrocketing public university tuitions!
