Two men with ties to a defunct church-operated home for girls and boys in Bienville Parish—and to the Baptist minister and accused sexual predator who ran the facility—currently are actively involved in the congressional campaign of State Sen. Neil Riser (R-Columbia), LouisianaVoice has learned.
Timothy Johnson of Choudrant in Lincoln Parish, who was fired earlier this year as a vice president at Louisiana College after leading an unsuccessful coup against President Joe Aguillard, is married to the daughter of Rev. Mack Ford who ran New Bethany Home for Girls and Boys south of Arcadia in Bienville Parish for several decades.
Timothy Johnson performs work on behalf of the Riser campaign, Riser’s campaign headquarters confirmed on Monday. His son, Jonathan Johnson, Ford’s grandson, worked for about a decade as State Director for retiring 5th District Congressman Rodney Alexander at $75,000 per year and is currently a paid employee of the Riser campaign.
LouisianaVoice has obtained more than a dozen affidavits from women who lived at New Bethany as teenagers and each one accuses Ford of sexual abuse, including rape and in at least one case, of having forced a 17-year-old girl at the school to perform oral sex on him.
The girl, now a woman with children of her own, said Ford had her follow him into a building on the New Bethany grounds only to encounter a woman who was cleaning the office. He told the woman to leave so he could “counsel” the girl. Once the woman was gone, he directed the girl to get on her knees. “I thought it was to pray,” she said, but then she said Ford unzipped his pants.
Another girl who claimed to have been subjected to sexual abuse at the hands of Ford, attempted to have Ford prosecuted after she left the home, married and had children of her own but law enforcement officials and the district attorney’s office in Bienville Parish ignored her claims until, despondent over her failed efforts, she committed suicide. Before she killed herself, however, she fired off a scathing letter to Ford.
In her letter, she reminded Ford that she was recruited for a singing quartet which would visit area churches to give testimony in order to attract monetary donations to the home and he would then later force her to have sex with him.
Once, while on a testimonial trip to Rhode Island, she said in her letter, she walked in on Ford having sex with another girl and instead of being contrite and ashamed, Ford blamed women in general, telling her that a man could “smell a woman” and that smell was what caused men to yield to temptation.
“You used your power to gratify your selfish, sick needs with no regard to the harm and pain and years of shame you were inflicting on innocent children,” she wrote. “And sickest of all (were) your attempts to find sexual fulfillment from children you had an obligation to protect. You lied to everyone—our families (and) multitudes of churches across the nation. You lied and said we were safe with you when in fact, you were a predator of the worst kind.”
When the children at the facility were not being sexually abused, each of the affidavits claim, they were being physically and mentally abused. The abuse including beatings, scrubbing children’s bodies with steel wool pads, handcuffing them to their beds with no opportunity to go to the bathroom, being forced to clean commodes and dog pens while wearing no rubber gloves, and forcing other residents to gang up on rebellious residents.
Female residents were forced to turn their backs and look down when male residents walked by. They were told if the boys lusted after them, it was their (the girls’) fault.
Children constantly ran away but were returned by sheriffs’ deputies and Ford steadfastly refused access to the grounds by state inspectors, claiming that he took no state money, was not licensed by the state and was not obligated to comply with state child care laws because as a church-affiliated facility, he was protected by the separation of church and state doctrine.
One of the things the state wanted to inspect was a four-story girls’ dorm that had no windows and no sprinkler system in the building.
It took decades before the state was finally able to shut the facility down and when it was finally closed in 1996, at the organization’s final board meeting, the board member who made the motion to sell off all the facility’s assets was Timothy Johnson, Ford’s son-in-law, married to one of the Fords’ eight daughters.
A support group comprised of former residents of New Bethany who say they each were physically, mentally and sexually assaulted claim that one girl who was assaulted by Ford managed to record the attack and was subsequently whisked away from the school by Timothy Johnson in an effort to protect his father-in-law.
Despite this incident and despite his serving on the board and making the motion to sell the home’s assets, Timothy Johnson is said to have insisted in a conversation with an employee at Louisiana College that he had never heard of New Bethany.
Another interesting twist emerging from documents received by LouisianaVoice involved a 1981 visit to another of Ford’s homes, the New Bethany School for Boys in Longstreet in De Soto Parish. The chairman and spokesman for the school, Rev. Bill Burrows, met with state officials and told them New Bethany was not required to be licensed by the state because of a new state law he had written with the help of then-State Rep. Woody Jenkins of Baton Rouge.
Jenkins would later make three unsuccessful runs for the U.S. Senate against incumbents J. Bennett Johnston, Russell B. Long and Mary Landrieu.
Ford even branched out in his operations, following the pattern set by his mentor, Lester Roloff, who ran several such schools in Texas before dying in a 1982 plane crash. Ford opened a school in Walterboro, S.C., where one of his daughters resided. South Carolina officials later raided that facility, however, and arrested two men who ran the home for cruelty to juveniles after authorities found boys locked in concrete cells wearing only their underwear and with just a coffee can for a toilet.
Ford taught the girls that it was a sin to wear pants and makeup or to listen to popular music or watch television and that if they were friends with anyone of a different faith, they would go to hell.
One girl said she was forced by one of the women at New Bethany to pull up her dress and to pull down her panties at which time she was beaten on her buttocks with a paddle.
On another occasion, a girl said she arrived at New Bethany and was sitting in a room when Ford walked in and asked her name. When she did not respond, he grabbed her by the hair and slapped her repeatedly with both the palm and back of his hand until she screamed out her name. He then told her she would continue to be “spanked” until she could answer in a civil tone.
One girl said she saw a girl who refused to eat grabbed by “several resident females” and held down while a staff member pried open her mouth and shoved peas down into her mouth. When she tried to spit them out, the food was shoved back into her mouth until she gagged whereupon she was told by the staff member that if she threw up, she would be paddled.
One man who removed his daughter from New Bethany was especially critical of the methods employed by Ford. “He would take those kids around to area churches to give testimonials about what a wonderful place it was,” he said. “And those kids weren’t about to rebel because they knew what would be waiting for them later if they did. When they would give their tear-jerking testimonials, the church members would hit the floor with their knees while reaching for their wallets to held Mack Ford with a love offering,” he said.
Ford now lives in retirement at the back of the New Bethany property and his son-in-law moved first into academia and now both he and his son have are involved in the Riser campaign that has itself been the subject of considerable criticism.
First, Alexander announced he would retire in a matter of weeks and then Gov. Bobby Jindal immediately announced Alexander’s hiring as head of the State Office of Veterans Affairs at $150,000 per year, a job that will give a substantial boost (from about $7,500 per year to $82,000 per year) to Alexander’s state retirement over and above his federal retirement and social security benefits.
Then Riser announced his candidacy…but before Alexander had gotten around to announcing that he was stepping down, according to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC), leading to well-founded speculation that the Alexander retirement and subsequent state job offer was orchestrated by Jindal to open the door for Riser. Riser, for his part, said the FEC incorrectly dated his candidacy documents.
The state congressional delegation, with the exception of the state’s two U.S. Senators, Democrat Mary Landrieu and Republican David Vitter, immediately endorsed Riser for the 5th District seat.
So now we have a candidate for an office that was created for him by the governor to replace a sitting congressman who will move into a cushy appointive position to feather his state retirement while two campaign workers—a son-in-law and a grandson—tied to a fundamentalist Baptist preacher who is said to have preyed on teenage girls for several decades now work in the candidate’s campaign.
And Jindal tried to tell us on inauguration day back in 2008 that it was a new day in Louisiana.
You can’t sell this as fiction; the plot would be considered far too improbable.
I think I heard about this home in SC. Wasn’t there something on tv about it years ago?
Timothy Johnson, if I’m not mistaken, is the grandson of Bro. Johnson, who was the first pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church–the church I grew up in.
What a sick bunch of people. These religious fanatics are slimy and give me the creeps.

You most likely DID hear something about it. It was national news….in the NYT, TIME magazine, Deseret News…..and many others:
” Timothy Johnson, a Baptist minister from Orlando, Fla., and the son-in-law of New Bethany founder, the Rev. Mack Ford, said he was very pleased with the judge’s decision.”

What a nightmare for these children, boys and girls, and yet no one paid the price, they should all be required to wear a sign and be flogged for their abuse and ignoring this abuse then anyone who allows it should be punished also. Why does these political leaders condone this behavior and allow their names to be connected to this group of nuts? Maybe they have something to hide, too! Watch out they may end up in D.C. and make or allow new laws to govern over US, wouldn’t that be a travesty?
Do not know Mr. Riser. That is a stretch. I would hope this campaign does not lower to this. I was not a Rodney Alexander fan. I was leaning toward Mayo or Johnson. I will now give Mr. Riser or others another look.
You’re a little late. They stepped lower when they orchestrated the Riser campaign a month before Alexander suddenly decided to retire, with promise of of a plum $150K a year Jindal appointment also boosting his state retirement over 80 grand annually from 7800.00, with the proviso of a swift Riser endorsement. You can bet your house that Riser knows all about these workers, paid and unpaid, and didn’t have enough common sense to forbid it. Jindal probably wasn’t aware of the New Bethany connection, but then vetting has never been his strong suit. With all the hijinks in this setup, the only reason I could think someone would want to rethink Riser would be if they are in law enforcement.
You wrote the facts and what an incredible beginning to four decades of crimes committed against male and female children, perpetrated by Mack W. Ford and male and female staff members.. The physical and sexual abuse was reported to authorities, police officers saw the bruises, social workers saw the bloody bruising, and although now retired, social workers told us that the faces of the children of New Bethany haunted them to this day. When Mrs.Halverson, retired social worker told the Survivors of New Bethany, “We believed you,” we could not help but wonder why no one rescued us.
Thank you for shining light on a wicked man and his family members, who covered for and helped hide Ford’s rape of little girls. Timothy Johnson knew to report the rape of children to law enforcement; instead, his wife removed the girl-turned-staff in the wee hours of the morning in 1991. The other victims, believed the the girl-turned-staff ran away during the night, leaving them without hope that she would report their abuse to social services.
Neither Mr. Johnson (Timothy nor Jonthan) can claim to have no knowledge or connection to any of what father-in-law and grandpa Mack W. Ford was doing to children for more than 30 years. They were BOTH sitting members of the board of directors at New Bethany when they were part of the unanimous vote to close the facility due to “having lost state and federal cases and with no further recourse avaiable”.
Has Riser made a public statement in regards to the pedophiles working on his campaign? This case of New Bethany schools and reports of abuse were made public—reports which anyone could have googled. The most important questions remain: how did the perpetrators and accessories to the crimes go unpunished and why would Riser allow them to be part of his campaign?
Pleading ignorance is never an excuse! Wasn’t Jindal’s more recent “promise!!!” to get tough on pedophiles? I am certain he will look the other way about this report, too. Thank you, Tom, for exposing this very important story. These are real people who were children at the hands of perpetrators. We must act in their best interest and vote against any and all parties involved in evil acts against children.
“The most important questions remain: how did the perpetrators and accessories to the crimes go unpunished and why would Riser allow them to be part of his campaign?” Indeed, who protected them and why? Who will protect them from prosecution now? What is Alexander’s role/history with this family? Politicians, preachers, pedophiles and Piyush – what a nasty combination. Mr. Tom, I hope this article opens the door to justice for these victims. Thank you.
“how did the perpetrators and accessories to the crimes go unpunished”? Some of those answers lie with Child Protective Services. And with those in the La. Attorney Generals office who were involved in the the legal dealings and abuse allegations at New Bethany periodically over the decades. And some of those answers also lie with the children who were quietly removed, (one who made the written claim that she was removed from New Bethany by the Johnsons) sometimes in the middle of the night, and sent elsewhere, so as not to be interviewed by authorities.
How? By following the tried and true methods Lester Roloff taught all his disciples who operated or presently operate these kinds of places. They HIDE the children, for one example, described at 1:44 in this video from a former resident of one of the Roloff-spinoff homes (Victory Christian Academy in Ramona, Ca.):
New Bethany is a shining example of the successful methodology of evading prosecution taught by Lester Roloff. I think it’s very possible that Ford being able to avoid prison time is the very reason why Roloff’s methods are still considered successful. If they weren’t, would Hephzibah House still be open? I think not! Because then Anderson Cooper360 wouldn’t have reported on it:
In THIS circle of men, Ford is a success story. And places like this will stay in business as long as that remains true.
Since Riser said he was going to get tough on pedophiles, maybe he will grow some stones and go after this bunch.{I can dream!~} How can a genuine person know these facts and do nothing to help the kids, who grew into men and women… many of us hating the gods of Mack Ford and his minions? I have such severe panic attacks, the thought of entering a church makes me physically ill, I’m not about to think god might intervene and do something now to bring justice against the crimes against humanity.
Who flogs children on the bottom of their feet? Lock kids in their underwear, in an small brick building without a mat or clean blanket to lay on, with a coffee can with Pine Sol in it for a toilet, pumping the screaming, damning to hell messages of Phil Kidd and Mack Ford via speakers inside the little concrete room, that was without a window or light.
Who beats a kid in the face the first moments they enter NB, terrified out of their minds, many had been tricked into and drugged to get them to NB. When Ford demanded oral sex, he threatened the young girls that if they bit him, he would kill them. Does anyone know the depths of fear that those around you will kill you? I do.
What kind of warped humans stand for, or refuse to stand against criminals in the pulpit, who twist the minds of children, many were children who called the state their parents, CA, TX, LA, NM, SC, and a few other states sent foster children, children whose parents were imprisoned, and abandoned children to live at NB where those children were abused in the name of the NB gods.
As a teenager, Mechille Evans-Searles wandered through the swamps at night, terrified of snakes and alligators, but not as afraid of the wild animals as she was of the wild pathetic excuses for humans that ran NB. She made it to the police, twice. Twice she was returned to NB to be beaten and raped again. I will never believe she tried to take her own life, although, she died just the same. She had a plane ticket to Houston and in three days, she and I were going on a road trip to gather the BPSO police reports that she filed as a child, to talk to the Office of Attorney General, to the FBI, to the Social Services in Shreveport and Arcadia, and three days before she planned to begin a civil lawsuit against Mack Ford, she was found dead in the floor of her bathroom.
I wonder how long people will allow themselves to think about what went on in Arcadia Louisiana and I wonder if anyone will actually make a move to investigate why Mack Ford was allowed to harm so many kids, over so many decades.
It would be instructive to look at Riser’s campaign finance reports to see the amounts these people have contributed. I wonder who else they contributed to and for how much? Hypocrisy knows no bounds when it comes to money.
As far as gross abuse of children and others look at how many of these incidents are associated with doing “the Lord’s work.” For sheer magnitude alone, look at the world’s largest Christian religion, the Catholic church. Is it any wonder organized religion is on the decline?
One of the first things we did was to check the campaign contributions and neither of the Johnsons nor Mack Ford were major players.
What about their family members or organizations they control?
Has anybody thought to look at who exactly is overseeing the “holdings” of the church since all the property, business investments, mineral and oil rights, money, etc. that were gained by Ford when the compound was still being run as a girls prison, with those holdings being transferred to “New Bethany Baptist Church”? Where is this church, anyway? And what kind of man would pastor a church with such a wicked past? And who are the members of New Bethany Baptist Church? And why are other churches all over the country still sending missionary support to the girls home when it’s closed? What a bunch of underhanded craziness!
Wow! All I can say after reading all this is, “Lord have mercy!”
Author Tom,
You have done your homework! Connecting the dots gives an all too clear despicable picture of good old boy networking, and to hell with the vulnerable.
For those of us who are grown survivors of such institutions, survivors of such men as Mac Ford, it has been frustrating to know people stood by and did nothing while the abuse was happening.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for exposing these men.

I guess since the Johnson tag-team is so adept at covering up criminal activity, primarily the systemic sexual abuse of minor children…..that they COULD HAVE PREVENTED by reporting it the authorities, Riser feels that they will be an asset? Stranger things have happened…..
Another great job, just know that Tim Teepell, and Jindal call all of these shots, and now we need to stop the politicization of the Dep. of Veterans Affairs, appointing Alexander is an insult to veterans, and an admission or confession that the Governor’s Honor Medal was transparently political and patently duplicitous. On Message and the Governor should reimburse the taxpayers for the hundreds of thousands of dollars of La. taxpayer money, during fake budget times, to do nothing other than promote Jindal. Of course, the hapless La. legislature took years to curtail the program. ron Thompson
I guess once it got started, the legislators felt they were damned if they did and damned if they didn’t stop these photo op/political propaganda presentation events. It took enough negative publicity over a long enough time, including that from veterans themselves, to bring an end to it.
Predators hiding behind veneer of religious and lawful respectability, protected by the likes of Mr. Jenkins, for one. Children of this state are only objects to be used and discarded. Witness recent attempts by this administration to privatize educational, mental health and medical systems. Thousands have been lost in transition. Sharp increases in child neglect and abuse, child deaths, lower immunization rates, ER visits, defy the rosy picture painted by the administration.
Look at the videos above. Chilling! Would an innocent man surround himself with 3 fearsome German Shepherd dogs, 10 foot high fences, and discharge a shotgun 3 times out of fear of 5 or so unarmed women? Of course not. Mack Ford was clearly guilty of child abuse and predatory practices and Timothy and Jonathan Johnson (son-in-law and grandson, respectively) knew it and actively acted to permit its continuation.
And now Rodney Alexander, Neil Riser and Bobby Jindal align themselves with evil men such as these (as the Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Deputy is quoted as saying in the “Facing Our fears” video above). This in itself make these three politicians unfit to hold an office of public trust,
Thanks Tom, very sad article, my heart goes out to all of Mack Ford’s victims. And shame on a justice system that did nothing. This old man and all of the people who were involved in this disgusting episode should be under the jail house….The Jindal/Alexander/Riser deal just makes me sick, but much of Louisiana slumbers on…..including the comatose media.
All I can say is WOW.
As a survivor of New Bethany homes, I can tell you Mack Ford and his family have done everything in their power to silence us. We have been threatened numerous times, as well as constantly being called liars. Yet there is over four decades of documented abuse from both the boys and the girls homes. I have returned to New Bethany two times in the past few years. As seen in the videos above, Mack Ford did not want anything to do with us and went so far as to fire gun shots to scare us off and calling the law to have us removed from public property. If this Man of God, as he claims to be, had nothing to hide he would have come out and greeted us and asked how our lives were. He sits in that self made prison now, scared that we are coming back to expose him. And we are!!! There are thousands of survivors of New Bethany who all suffer from some type of mental illness due to the abuse we endured as children in Mack’s care. It is time that people started listening to us, we are no longer children lying to get out of trouble. Many of us are adults with families of our own. We are still treated as if we are the troubled teens trying to get someone into trouble. This could not be further from the case. We were severely abused as children. If you put all the things together that every child did to be sent to New Bethany, it would not begin to compare to the Crimes committed against us by Mack Ford and his Staff. New Bethany was a prison for children, we were beaten tortured raped, physically mentally and spiritually abused at the hands of people who were supposed to help us. We Deserve JUSTICE!!!!

I recommend that you place a petition on Change.org to shut this hell-hole and all others like it down. That ought to do the trick.
Tom’s site deserves credit for bringing this whole sordid mess out into the open, Kim Holt’s posts, and those of other victims, provide enormous insights into issues that go way beyond Riser and his staff.
When you read Kim Holt’s last post and then look at the schools to which the state is currently granting charters, it is not hard to imagine how a boarding school like New Bethany could conceivably get a charter – that is frightening, as is our state’s overall approach to public education.
Bob and B. R. boils the case down by taking God out of the equation. But isn’t there a difference between the power of a coach and that of a “man of the cloth”? Sandusky is a pedophile, but I’ve seen no evidence he presented himself as an earthly representative of God.
Thank you, Tom.

This story, and the continuation made me physically ill when I read them. How can Jindal be caught up with people like this? And Jindal wants to create more unaccountable voucher schools and charters that take public dollars but are free to operate privately and beyond the scrutiny of the public. Does anyone else remember the Abramson Charter scandal? http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/2011/07/abramson_high_school_whistlebl.html
guess what? That was covered up. Jacob Landry landed a job paying 6 figures, more money than his previous one, two weeks later in Jefferson Parish and he is still there. Jefferson Parish is closely tied to LDOE and is loaded to the brim with TFA. This type of behavior and corruption is truly disgusting.
What I find to be most almost as disgusting, selfish and anti-Christ as what this Mack Ford man was ALLOWED (you read that right) by the state of La. to get away with, is the fact that his son-in-law, Tim Johnson, and grandson, Jonathan Johnson have not shown one speck of compassion or concern for any of those they stepped back and ALLOWED their evil patriarch to harm. No repentance from the Mr.’s Johnson! NONE! And the both of them claim to be called of God to preach His word! If that is not the ultimate act of blasphemy against the God they claim to serve, then none of us have to worry about going to hell if the both of them make it through the pearly gates when the Lord sees fit to thump them off this rock we live on.
SHOW YOUR FAITH, Tim and Jonathan! Show your humility and willingness to serve God as He commands you to! Be the SALT and the LIGHT! Minister to and offer help to those that were harmed by YOUR FAMILY! Show the compassion and faith that you claim to have been given by the Holy Spirit. Show everyone your TRUE TESTIMONY and humility in the faith by taking a stand and saying “NO MORE will I remain silent so children can continue to be harmed this way under the umbrella of Christianity! As a man called of God to minister to the hurting and downtrodden, I WILL STAND WITH THEM! I will do whatever it takes to show those who believe they can get away with wholesale child-trafficking, exploitation and systemic sexual abuse BECAUSE MACK FORD DID, that their time of serving Satan under the guise of religion has come to an end, and that they will be held accountable while here on this earth!”
…….or else just go along your merry little way kissing butt and climbing the political ladder.
EVERYONE is watching to see what you will do. Everyone is listening to hear what you will say. I promise they are.
This morning I found a good description of the Roloff method of child rearing on another blog.

New Bethany is not a fluke. Not a one-of-a-kind “mission” at all.

In America, there was a string of “Christian” (I use the term loosely) reform homes, where children were subjected to horrifying abuse. Some of them still exist; most of them use Accelerated Christian Education. This is the tip of the iceberg.
Terrifyingly enough, Johnny, these “homes” are still in the present tense. All over the United States and abroad. And those who operate them see that Mack Ford has never been prosecuted, leaving them to rest easy that they won’t either. How soon until more of these places open up, in Louisiana as well as other states? When will our elected officials and law enforcement agencies stop being pansies with deep pockets and put an end to this?
Thank you numb. I am making it a personal mission to draw attention to this.
