Let the word go forth. From the bayous in the south to the watermelon patches in the north, from Bourbon Street in New Orleans to Texas Street in Shreveport, from McNeese to Louisiana Tech, let the people know:

It’s been a long wait and there were several delays but at long last, my book Bobby Jindal: His Destiny and Obsession has arrived at the Pelican Publishing Co. warehouse in Gretna.

For those who may need reminding or who may not know, I wrote the book as a reminder of what the voters of this state must never be fooled into doing again: voting for a snake oil salesman like Bobby Jindal. His economic, higher education and healthcare policies have set this state back an entire generation and public education remains in a constant state of turmoil, thanks to his voucher and charter school policies.

And we didn’t even mention his campaign contributions and their links to lucrative state contracts. For that, you will have to read the book.

Pelican will be shipping out to bookstores and to those who pre-ordered through them in the next few days. One of those stores will be Cavalier House Books in Denham Springs where more than 60 copies have already been pre-ordered.

Upon arrival at Cavalier, the bookstore owner, John Cavalier, will summon me to his store where I will sign copies of all his pre-orders before he ships them out to the purchaser.

I also will be sending out my own copies to those who contributed the specified amounts in our October fund drive. If I remember my list correctly, there are about 20 of those who will be receiving free, signed copies.

If you are not on Cavalier’s or my list, and wish to have a signed copy, you may still order from Cavalier by clicking on the image of the book cover to the lower right of this post.

I want to express my deepest appreciation to those of you who participated in October to get your free copy (yes, like a good advertising shill, we still call a book in exchange for a couple hundred bucks donation to LouisianaVoice “free.”).

I also wish to thank each of you who donated for your patience during the delays in publication. The book was supposed to be out in January but got pushed back by unavoidable delays. You should all have your copy by this time next week.

[By the way: our fund drive is officially over, but you may still contribute by clicking on the yellow “DONATE” button to the upper right.]

Thanks again!

We’re heading into the final two days of our April fund drive. Friday and Saturday are the last days of this month’s efforts to raise money to finance research, travel and court costs.

We’re still a little short of our goal and we need your help in our final push so that we can continue to write provocative stories about what our elected and appointed officials are doing that affects all our lives.

Remember, everything they do, they do it with taxpayer dollars—our dollars. It is imperative that we keep tabs on how our money is being spent. Are our hard-earned taxes being used efficiently to get the most bang for the buck to benefit the citizens of Louisiana? Or are they being used to benefit those who we have elected or appointed?

Are our representatives representing us or the corporations, special interests and lobbyists who pour money into political campaigns in order to buy elections and own politicians?

That’s what we do at LouisianaVoice. We have never taken a campaign contribution and we’ve never had a meal courtesy of a lobbyist. In short, we don’t sell out to the highest bidder. By extension, we are your voice in Baton Rouge—an independent voice that will give you the unvarnished truth about our elected officials.

Please help us in that endeavor by clicking on the yellow “DONATE” button to the right or mail your contributions to:

Thank you for five great years! Let’s go for five more.

Our April fund drive is entering its final week and we’re still quite a ways from what is needed to sustain and expand our operations.

Remember, we don’t accept advertising (with the exception of the free ad for Cavalier House Books) and we don’t charge a subscription. That’s because we don’t want to be obligated to any sponsor in case of a story that may conflict with the sponsor’s interests and because we want our posts to be available to everyone, including those who cannot afford a monthly subscription fee.

If the no subscription policy is to continue, we need your help. If only a fraction of our 3,000 subscribers contributed $10 or $20, that would be sufficient. Unfortunately, only a few contribute and they have done so repeatedly—and we so much appreciate their support.

So, please click on the yellow “DONATE” button at lower right and pay by credit care or mail your checks to:

If you like what LouisianaVoice is doing in stories like the one below, please help us during our semi-annual fund drive.

We just turned five years old and in those five years, we have received more and more requests to look into irregularities and outright corruption at the state, parish and municipal levels.

Today, we are inundated with leads to stories, good stories. Unfortunately, as a one-man operation, and as much as I would love to, I do not have the financial resources or the time to devote to every story out there.

With your help, that could change. I would love to recruit good investigative reporters to help cover these stories. But to ask them to contribute their time and resources, I would need to be able to offer some type of stipend.

If you like what LouisianaVoice has been doing over the past five years, think how effective we could be with five or six regular writers!

To accomplish that, your help is needed. There are legal filing fees for our lawsuits, copies of documents we are required to pay for (We have our own portable scanner, but clerks of court do not allow you to scan their documents; in fact they got their own special law passed to that effect a few years ago to protect their cash cow), and vehicle upkeep.

I know the timing is awful considering Monday is federal tax deadline day. But with some 3,000 regular subscribers, if only a few hundred gave $5 or $10, it could make a tremendous difference.

I have been advised that I should charge a subscription fee and perhaps I should. It would probably be more profitable in the long run. But I am determined that the content of LouisianaVoice shall be available to everyone, not just to those who can afford a monthly subscription fee.

Moreover, I don’t want to be beholden to any sponsor who might be offended by one or more of our posts. That is why I allow only one advertisement on my Web page: that of Cavalier House Books. That’s because the owner, John Cavalier, built this Web page for me and even then, I had to virtually twist his arm to get him to put his ad on our page.

So, you see, like Blanche DuBois of Streetcar Named Desire, I depend on the kindness of strangers.

Please make your contribution of whatever amount you are comfortable with by pressing the yellow “donate” button to the right of this post. Or you may send a check to:

One more thing: My book about the disastrous eight years of misrule by Bobby Jindal entitled Bobby Jindal: His Destiny and Obsession is scheduled for release on Monday, April 18. (Is the irony lost on anyone that the book about the man who took the Grover Norquist no-tax pledge is coming out on Federal Tax Day?)

You can pre-order a copy personally signed by yours truly by clicking on the image of the book cover (also to the right of this post). You will be placing your order with Cavalier House Books which will mean you will also be supporting a local mom and pop business as opposed to some big box store or Amazon. John Cavalier will summon me to his store (about three blocks from my home) when he receives his shipment of books so that I may sign your copy before he mails it to you.

The stark contrast between bigoted demagoguery and compassionate pragmatism was never more evident than in separate actions taken over the past few days by politicians in state houses some 1400 miles apart.

Today (Wednesday, April 13) Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards with his own executive order, rescinded an executive order signed by his predecessor, Republican Bobby Jindal, before he left office which had sanctioned not-so-subtle discrimination against gays, lesbians and transsexuals. http://theadvocate.com/news/politics/15477529-123/john-bel-edwards-signs-executive-order-barring-lgbt-discrimination-in-state-government

Last Friday (April 8), Arizona Republicans, like so many zombied-out sheep, obediently went along with Republican House Speaker David Gowan’s move to protect legislators from potentially dangerous American reporters. http://m.dailykos.com/stories/2016/4/9/1512708/-Arizona-House-Speaker-retaliates-against-reporter-who-caught-him-breaking-the-law?detail=email&link_id=5&can_id=1a7e5aba8dd05d9ae0093ba641288738&source=email-for-the-love-of-all-that-is-good-do-not-use-turbotax-this-year&email_referrer=for-the-love-of-all-that-is-good-do-not-use-turbotax-this-year&email_subject=for-the-love-of-all-that-is-good-do-not-use-turbotax-this-year

Those members of the Fourth Estate can be pretty whup-ass when they start pencil-whipping some poor, defenseless politician. Like Arizona Capitol Times reporter Hank Stephenson who earlier this year wrote a story about Gowan’s use of a state vehicle for his congressional campaign. Using a state vehicle for that purpose is against the law and Gowan logged nearly 4800 miles the car during a 19-day period.

He has since reimbursed the state more than $12,000 and he is currently under investigation by the Arizona Attorney General for misuse of public resources.

(Before you ask, Louisiana’s Attorney General is barred from initiating such investigations under the State Constitution adopted in 1974. Local district attorneys lobbied the Constitutional Convention hard that year to keep the AG out of their local business despite opposition to the provision by then-Attorney General Billy Guste. The only way the AG can come into an investigation is at the specific request of the local DA.)

Edwards signed the order banning discrimination against the LGBT community in the course of offering state services and benefits. In doing so, he went against the tide of red states that have passed oppressive laws designed to appease the hysterical right wingnuts and which only serve to fan the flames of hatred and narrow-mindedness.

The new policy, by order of Gowan, requires reporters seeking access to the House floor to submit to background checks so that Gowan can be certain they’re not hardened criminals in disguise.

But get this: the policy even lists specific offenses that can get a reporter barred from the House floor for up to 10 years. One of those offenses is misdemeanor trespass.

Wouldn’t you know Stephenson was convicted of misdemeanor trespass following a bar fight a couple of years back.

So now he can be barred because of misdemeanor trespass while the Gowan retains his Speaker’s post despite his apparent misappropriation of state property.

What are the odds?

Capitol reporters closed ranks behind Stevenson and refused to undergo the background checks.

On Tuesday, under pressure from fellow Republicans, Gowan suspended his vindictive ban but House Republicans voted to preserve his unilateral authority to decide in the future whether to rescind overall access or even to ban an individual report for any reason he chooses.

Moreover, a House spokesman said badges that were given Capitol beat reporters which opened certain doors, giving reporters access to lawmakers’ offices, including that of the Speaker, were not being reactivated.

No wonder a survey by the LSU School of Mass Communication released today shows that only 18 percent of those surveyed feel that they can trust Louisiana state government to “do what is right.”

LSU SURVEY

The same survey showed that 95 percent of respondents felt that “every citizen should have complete access to information about their state government” and 82 percent said citizens should have access to records about incentives state government gives to businesses for locating or expanding in Louisiana.

Edwards signed the order banning discrimination against the LGBT community in the course of offering state services and benefits. In doing so, he went against the tide of red states that have passed oppressive laws designed to appease the hysterical right wingnuts and which only serve to fan the flames of hatred and narrow-mindedness.

North Carolina recently passed an anti-gay law that prompted Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr to their concerts in that state. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/04/08/bruce-springsteen-cancels-n-c-show-to-protest-bathroom-law/

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2016/04/13/ringo-starr-north-carolina-concert/

North Carolina Republican Congressman Mark Walker called Springsteen a “coward” for cancelling his concert.

A wise man once told me the most valuable possession a man may have is his dignity and when that’s taken away, he has nothing. That man was my grandfather, who had only a sixth grade education and he possessed wisdom legislators that voted to strip away peoples’ basic rights could only hope to attain.

North Carolina has attempted to take away the dignity of an entire group of citizens. That makes the North Carolina Legislature, and by extension, Congressman Mark Walker, the bullies.

The mayor of Portland, Oregon, refused to travel to Mississippi for the commissioning of the USS Portland because of that state’s anti-gay legislation, so the ceremony was moved to Portland instead.

Other states, namely Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky, have passed similar laws. When the Louisiana Legislature defeated a similar measure last year, Jindal, who had been critical of President Obama’s executive orders, signed his own executive law that basically accomplished the same anti-gay sanctions the other states had approved.

“We are fortunate enough to live in a state that is rich with diversity, and we are built on a foundation of unity and fairness for all or our citizens,” Edwards said after signing his order.

And therein lies the difference in attitudes.
