Just to lighten things up a bit, the town of Start is in Richland Parish (pop. 905). It has a volunteer fire department. Here is a photo of the START FIRE DEPARTMENT (and yes, the photo was strategically cropped for this post).

I like their logo of what appears to be a cotton boll on fire. I wonder how often there are cotton fires?
Start is up the creek (Bouef) from Alto. Yes, fire is a serious threat to cotton, especially during ginning (at least it was 70 yrs ago , not sure we gin anymore) Gov. Earl LOng would come to our gin opening at Franklin gin in Holly Ridge. I thought he had peanuts in his coke bottle. I still have family in Start that I love dearly although most have “unliked” me , thanks for the memories ron thompson
